I got 5 hens about a month or so ago. They are very young. And just started laying eggs
Do you have chickens? What do you feed em. I'm using scratch corn and lay crumbles 50/50 mix.
They're in a 6x6 kennel. Eith a little coop thing I built. Got some sticks in the corner for them to roost. But def need to put like an old bookcase in there. I know they like to roost up high.
Growing up we always had chickens. So it feels good to have some now

I grew up on a farm, and my grandfather raised chickens. They can be a lot of fun. I remember we used to feed them a lot of stuff that looked like grape nuts, but smaller. So some sort of a grain mix and he’d buy it from the feed store. I’m sure you can find a good brand.
Looking to get some eggs?

That’s a lot of protein. Even three eggs in the morning feels like a lot for me.

I used to have around 30 chickens at any given time for a long time.
I would free range my birds and feed them layiena mixed with other grains and grit.
I haven't had any for 5 years now and I do miss them but also I had too many and was a decent amount of upkeep.
One thing I don't miss is the predators, I live in the backwoods and if I wasn't actively trapping and shooting things I could loose half my flock over night, usually just one or two. But I had one time all my birds got killed. Fisher cats, mink, weasels, racoons, bobcats can do a lot of damage.
One thing that was fun was unlimited supply of eggs. To the point of how the hell am I going to use / cook these. I could'ent sell or give enough away at one point and had a dedicated egg fridge.

Yeah chickens are great, I call them walking compost bins because they demolish most food waste I generate in the house.
For food: - they self-feed on layers pellets out of the feed hopper. Layers pellets should have most things they need.
- they get fancy feed grain mix as a treat in the morning and afternoon.
-crushed oyster shells are placed in and around their dust baths as grit/calcium source.
- I recycle egg shells for calcium/grit too by rinsing them out, boiling and crushing them.
- they eat most household food waste that we would eat. If I'm not sure if they will eat it I throw it on the compost heap and they can scratch through whatever they want.
- any left over fruit from my trees goes to the hens/ducks too, it has to be crushed for them first. I usually collect it all in a bucket (apples, pears, plums) and serve it to them with a tennis racket chopping it all up with each swing.

I've got about 15 running around right now. They're pretty chill. I feed them primarily layer crumble but they also occasionally get cracked corn and grain and other stuff that doesn't get fed to the pigs.
We've got 2 turkeys now too and I think I like them a little bit more to be honest.

I butchered a rooster once for spiritual and dinnertable reasons.
Maybe in the future i'll live roomier and have chickens.

I try not to waste food but this is a good idea!
Problem is I eat mainly chicken so don't want to create cannibal birds.

Be careful not to drop any eggs in there then. It’s quite frankly disturbing to watch them eat it as quickly as they do.

Apparently they're actually meant to eat their eggs. They use up a lot of vitamins and minerals creating an egg, so if one doesn't hatch they are meant to eat it too get those back. Taking their eggs consistently is not good for the chickens, but I guess that's what all the extra vitamins, oyster shells etc in their feed is for

Nice man. My parents bought some chicks a few years ago now and we watched em grow up. Was really cool with my kid being so young and super interested in animals going over there and playing with them.
My mom is such a kind soul the chickens absolutely adore her and cluck like crazy whenever she’s around. Could also be the food . They get a lot of meal worms and whatever plant scraps are left over from them cooking. Their eggs are ridiculous. Feel like we went a good 9 months without buying any last year.
Not their first go with them. Last batch they had was sadly ravaged by some raccoons, despite being fully enclosed with chicken wire. Nothing but feathers the next morning . This coup is a fortress from top to bottom though.

Are there a lot of snakes where your at?
For me I don't remember snakes ever being an issue . My birds would destroy a snake like veliciraptors.

I've lost them to birds of prey, raccoons/foxes, and snakes. The raccoons/foxes were only an issue years ago when we were living in a suburb near some woods. The current farm I live on was not occupied or maintained for about 10 years before we moved in. The snakes were a major issue for us back then but after living here for 5 years they've all been chased off. Now we really just have to worry about the hawks and falcons.
They're usually pretty smart and don't stray too far from their paddock but my favorite silky got caught slippin when she was only 5 feet beyond the fence. Hopefully the snakes leave your hens alone this season.

I live in a desert. We have snakes.
There's a red racer that comes by my house and hunts the birds that live in the trees. I've seen him for a few years.
