Helium Network [US]: Low Cost Mobile Service with ROI for Providing Distributed Connectivity
    #28629717 - 01/21/24 10:48 AM (7 days, 14 minutes ago)

I've been interested in crypto/blockchain and its nascent use cases for quite a while.  Over the last year, I became aware of the project Helium, which through various partnerships marries hardware with blockchain to implement an ecosystem of connected "Internet of Things" (IoT) devices.  The network now operates on top of the Solana blockchain, which is a longtime favorite and major holding of mine, as I believe their combination of low cost transactions and exceptionally high throughput, in conjunction with a lot of active project development, cement the network's present day leadership role with plenty of room for continued growth.

Recently, Helium launched Helium Mobile, an unlimited data cell phone plan debuting at $20/mo, which utilizes a grassroots network of small cell towers deployed by communications enthusiasts on the CBRS frequency spectrum that the FCC has opened for personal consumer use in the United States, in efforts to allow unique consumer-distributed projects like this to flourish.

Helium Mobile operates in partnership with T-Mobile in order to bridge the obvious coverage gaps as this system is still young and being built out.  Since other cell carriers are offering plans as low as $20-$25/mo while having to handle all of their own infrastructure and data needs, it is not unreasonable to believe that Helium's pricing here at the low end of the market is sustainable, since they are offloading much of their maintenance/provider services to consumers who setup the transmission hardware and provide network connectivity as a third party participant.

You might rightfully ask why anyone would want to spend the money and time to do this?  Participants in Helium's networks are incentivized by earning IOT and MOBILE tokens proportional to their support of the networks.  Now of course, this is highly speculative as an investment.  We don't know whether the network will succeed long term, and the value of crypto tokens is notoriously volatile (with most tokens ending up practically worthless over time).

Nevertheless, I am intrigued, and so I'm going to deploy 5G cell on my home in attempts to support the Helium network, via the following primary hardware:

  • FreedomFi 5G Gateway Miner - This gateway participates in the IoT network on its own, but is also necessary to connect and account for up to three associated CBRS FreedomFi certified small cell radios.

  • Baicells Nova 430H small cell radio - This is the small cell transmitter/receiver with an integrated antenna that you mount as high as possible, to distribute a cell signal with 0.5 mile range.

There are other cell radio options available, however the Baicells Nova 430H currently appears to offer the best coverage at the lowest cost, especially when using the coupon code "HELIUM500" at the above link, which will mark the 430H down to $1099 (plus applicable tax and shipping).  Further, the link for the gateway above is also marked down $400 through the end of the month.  The gateway and Nova 430H typically sell for $1000 and $1600+, respectively, so this combined ~35% discount appears to be a pretty good deal.  There is some additional equipment that may be required for mounting (e.g. J-pole), ethernet cables, and some optional items such as a larger antenna for the gateway that could boost its IoT coverage, but I'm early on this quest and am getting started with the very basics.

Since I live next to JPL, three high schools and am even within striking distance of a major freeway, I figure it's worth a shot to try this out, especially since I'm currently on T-Mobile with my regular cell phone, which is the backbone partner for the Helium network, and therefore my usage at home will theoretically increase my MOBILE token production by connecting through my own cell radio tower when I'm at home.  If it doesn't work out as planned, I might end up moving the system up to the family beach house where cell coverage is almost non-existent, so that I can have connectivity when I'm out on the sand and out of the home's basic WiFi range, as well as communicate with folks over standard SMS more easily.

All in all, I think this will be a pretty neat adventure.  It's too bad I didn't get on board for the genesis token distribution, but this is more of a curiosity itch than an actual investment.  I suspect however, that if things go as projected, I should make back my capital investment within a year or two.  You can project your potential earnings based on your personal geography and choice of cell radio using this nifty app if you're interested in this project (you'll want to experiment with your azimuth - the direction you point your radio - as large physical obstructions will limit your range):

Oh and lastly, I mentioned this in the crypto thread separately, but the Solana network is launching a second iteration of a consumer grade cell phone with integrated crypto wallet.  The first version, the Saga, ended up receiving airdrops ultimately worth thousands of dollars per phone holder.  The top two Solana NFT marketplaces have already pledged to promote alongside the release of the second Solana phone, although unit production will be at least 100K (versus the Saga's 16K), so I wouldn't necessarily expect the same bonus benefit.  Additionally, the phone is on pre-order and won't ship until first half 2025 at the earliest, so this definitely isn't a phone you should buy if you actually need a phone right now.  Nevertheless, I think it'll be cool to fiddle with, and for $450, worth the price of participation to me; even if it only serves as a glorified hardware wallet / mini-tablet, it's just neat to be part of the nascent development of tangible products related to the crypto industry.

Incidentally (albeit with no intended pressure!), if anyone here is considering ordering and wants to toss me a potential referral bonus, feel free to use this link:

I'll update this thread with some pic's once my hardware has arrived and I get my cell radio setup!
