casing crumbled
    #2862961 - 07/06/04 11:10 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Hello, I have two casings one is doing pretty good the other one got all crumbled and about half the casing was pushed away (top and bottom verm layers included) and now I have a pile of verm/colonized rye in one half... My question is. CanI save this casing by spreading it again even trhough it doesnt have too well defined layers. Maybe it will take longer but I shouldnt have any problems if I spread it with a sterilized spoon?

Yes, you can spread it back out, then give it a few days back in the
incubator, so the mycelium can rejoin its self into a mat again.

good luck, the thing to avoid is contams here, be as clean as poss.

Well I spread it the best I could with a spoon rubbed in alcohol soaked towel... It wasn't hard but it took my attention that the casing was now divided in little units of solid rocks of verm/rye/myc.. Is that because the mycelium? Or is it bad?
Since I couldnt distribute it properly because of that I left the rocks as close as I could and now Im gonna try and get some more verm or peat/lime to cover these rocks.. Or shouldnt I?
Im also worried that these rocks (at least the smaller ones) will not stand the weight of a mushroom and give me poor yields...
thanks in advance.

If it hasn't started pinning then I'd dunk with h202/water-recase then incubate again.Maybe you could pastuerise some straw and expand some chunks into a bigger bag/case?
As stated by Loky contams are your only real problem here..good luck.

Do you mean contams are my real problem with the casing? Or are they my only problem when dealing with this crumbled casing?

I havnt made it pin yet so I think Ill have to dunk it.. What is the best way to dunk it without using too much space and all tof that? (I dont want to bring attention at my friends house)

I know that after the first flushes dunking is important but why do I need it now?

I had a casing crumble like that before. It contamed after the first flush and the potency was very weak because I didn't incubate the mycelium chunks after they broke apart, so each chunk was fruiting it's own mushrooms and there wasn't a mycelium network in place.

what do yu mean you didnt incubate it? its already incubated inside the casing tray...
If I mash and mix the chunks and add some lime/peat to the whole stuff (of course also mixing it with some little verm I have left) do you think itll be ok?
Maybe dunking serves as reinforcing the mycelial network and t unite the pieces or what????

Please Letto give me more information from your experience!!
And byu the way how do I dunk a cased rye substrate shall I dunk it with the verm ror I put the verm apart and resterilize or something??? Im worried that when dunking it will break apart becuase its not a unit like a cake...

Why dunking? If its made up of a few chunks and one larger chunk it wont hold better in water but worse... why should I do this?

I now have peat and lime, no ph buffer but dont think i need it (or maybe i do, if i do i can sterilize some egg shells in my microwave? how long?). I dont know the lime source and cant get to measure the ph so if I'm covering the spaces between chunks and coveruing the myc spots will this casing be in btter conditions? Ill put some of the used verm mixed with the lime but cant get more verm.

In my ohter casing Ill just cover with peat/lime (no more verm r shall i also use the used one already in the casing?) or maybe I can ignore covering the mycelium spots and make it pin like that even tho the layer is not so thick (2 cms)...

Please consider all my questions and dont answer with using something like coco coir or get more verm because I can't get no more, please consider my actual conditions...
