Yeah, I'd feel pretty safe about consuming something extracted with isopropyl alcohol. It evaporates readily, and it's easy to smell if any remains.

id go with the 100% unless the price is radically more than the 70%

you should be fine with iso , but test other chemicals you might use instead by placeing some on some glass/petri dish or ect and evaporating and see if there is any left over residue, if there isnt, its good to go, as far as i know, i just read this stuff, ive only ever used alcohol, and only used that once

Can I dilute 100% ISO alcohol with water to receive 70% ISO alcohol [Re: Mush 4 Brains] * 1
    #28628065 - 01/20/24 02:54 AM (8 days, 12 hours ago)

Hello, thank you for this reply.
I need advice, if I have only 99% ISO alcohol and can't get 70%, can I just dilute it with water, as you said? Can I just pour 700 ml of 99% ISO alcohol and 300 ml of water into spray bottle and receive the same, like from store, 1 liter of 70% ISO alcohol? And if so, can I use tap water, or it must be distilled water, and why?

Wow - this thread's ancient!

Yes, you can.  As said above, 70% works better because it stays wet longer (hence the WHO recipe for sanitiser during Covid).

You can absolutely dilute it - I do as I could only find 99.9%.  I use water from the tap.

Yes, you can dilute down to whatever percentage you need.

What you dilute with, depends on the purpose you have in mind. For the vast majority of applications, tap water will be fine.

Btw, the reason why ethanol (so not IPA) generally comes as a 96% is because this is a stable azeotrope. Drying it up to 100% is hella energy intensive (=expensive), in practice generally not worth it, and as remarked earlier it'll just absorb atmospheric water until it's back to 96% again. For isopropyl alcohol, the azeotrope is 91% v/v. 100% IPA will therefore be significantly more expensive than any concentration up to 91% since the latter can be made with normal distillation processes, while anything from 91% upwards needs to be produced with an azeotropic distillation setup that involves the use of additional solvents, equipment and tightly controlled process conditions.

Alcohol can never be 100% - even the rubbing alcohol bottles which say so are actually ~97%.
The rest of it is water. (The same with the 70% - eg. 70% denatured alcohol, 30% water).

That not true. Those are the maximum concentrations of you use distillation. There are other methods to remove the excess water chemically. 100% ethanol is produced using a third solvent, sometimes benzene. Never consume lab grade 100% ethanol (absolute ethanol).

I read somewhere of lab students being killed by drinking absolute ethanol.

I think it was much more likely to be contaminated with benzene a few decades ago. It’s also possible people drink denatured ethanol that contains methanol. Uncontaminated 100% ethanol can be very irritating to mucus membranes.

Ok since all the answers are wrong about the alcohol being less effective I might as well explain.

Alcohol disinfects because it destroys cells by entering it.

In order to get inside the cell it must convince the cell to open it's membrane. Or fool it.

70% alcohol 30% water will fool the cell membrane to open up because it sees water and doesn't realize the alcohol is mixed in and therefore poisons itself.  So 30% water is enough for the cell to "drink' it.

The cell will not open up to 100% alcohol because it has no reason to. No water, no entry. If cells membranes let anything in all the time, life would probably not exist.  In a world where cell do let in everything and survive, we would be immuned to everything. We would be unpoisonable and uninfectable.

Old thread, but wanted to add a couple things:

Isopropyl alcohol is highly flammable, keep away from any flames. The vapors are flammable, so be aware of the danger even if you're applying it to a surface.

It doesn't do a better job at sanitizing things than soap and water.

It's a bit toxic so you don't want to be dealing with a bunch of it all the time.

That’s not what’s happening. Alcohol denatures many types of proteins, meaning it causes proteins to fall apart and lose their structure. Alcohols essentially dissolve vital parts of bacteria and viruses.

LOL you make it sound like cells have little gnomes standing guards at the outside of the cell wall telling chemicals to piss off.

In reality, cell membranes become more permeable due to the effects of solvents like alcohol. This is widely documented and well understood and has fuck all to do with "fooling" the cell showing it some water or any of that fairytale bullshit.
