Unsure what to do work wise moving forward - Looking for life advice. * 1
    #28626946 - 01/19/24 09:47 AM (8 days, 16 hours ago)

So I am a registered nurse since 2019.  I worked on a typical medical surgical unit on and off since September 2019 and it's been a disaster to the point where I have clearly developed what I guess is anxiety, PTSD, or a mix of the two.  The saving grace is I paid off nursing school, own my truck, and have a roof over my head.

I finished my last travel contract in November and have been just lounging around but here's the issue, I can not work in a hospital anymore I was having serious sleep issues, throwing up before shifts, having borderline panic attacks and shit so I can't do it to myself any more, I highly recommend most people against going into this field now after having done it myself.  I have worked in 3 hospitals and month by month, the job got worse and worse.  I recently read that 50% of RN's plan to leave the field in the next 5 years and I guess I am one of them.

I am not sure what to do though.  I have another degree in exercise science and certs in personal training I kept up with, so I am considering just walking into a gym and trying to be a new trainer there because I miss those days and maybe make nursing something on the side.

When I tell people about this in my life, they don't understand and I feel like I come off as an angsty teen .  When I was venting to my brother he said "Dude everyone hates their job, get over it."

I'm in my 30s.  I have worked many jobs.  No job has ever caused me this sort of bullshit in my life and he doesn't see dead bodies, horrible wounds, deal with autistic doctors, cunt nurse managers, and the American public who a huge chunk are absolutely terrible patients, trust me.  I don't hold it against him but it's just not something I would've understood either until doing it.

I dunno but the stress has built up over the last 5 years and I hit my breaking point where the thought of just offing myself crossed my mind and that's what was my o shit moment and having that thought run through my head is making me reevaluate a lot of stuff.

I am not suicidal at all either, but the conditions I worked in, hearing screaming every shift, bells and whistles, adrenaline dumps out of the blue because someone died unexpectedly etc.  I have had it.

So what now?  I am mid 30s and feel pretty lost and definitely know it's not a Grass looking greener scenario, the grass in nursing at least, is on fire.

Your trauma echoes that of RN's everywhere in the states.

Can you explore different avenues?
Home health, methadone clinics, detox facilities, WIC, public health?

Being a trainer could be fun.

Public health is needed.

I feel your trauma is definitely valid.
I hope you're able to find something that makes you happy.

I don't have any great advice for this - just wanna say that I don't think you come off like an angsty teenager at all, and nurses go through some shit. I'm sure that you will find a way to pivot with all your qualifications - might want to consider reading a book like What Color is Your Parachute (an updated one?) If you're thinking of exploring something really new/different.

I want to add too, as a male in nursing, I feel like we get dealt a worse hand nearly every shift and as a fucking traveling male nurse?  Bro, I'm done.  Last 2 years I'd basically clock in and get abused 12 hours straight.

Violent pt?  I gottem.  C. Diff pt?  O yea, I gottem, definitely getting the covid patient who is combative lmao.  I'm over it.

Discrimination works both ways  Sorry you dealt with it. I can see that happening, especially with violent patients. The assault rate on medical providers in general is pretty horrific. Being expected to be able to deal with it better just because you're a dude isn't right.

There are so many different things you can do with an RN that are way different than hospital work

Just some I can think of...

School nurse
Assisted living facility wellness nurse (super cushy and sometimes very high paying gig)
Psych hospitals or psych human service agencies
Ketamine clinic nurse
Adjunct teaching
nurse anesthetist
Outpatient clinic
Plasma clinic
Addiction/MAT clinic
Cruise line nurse
Forensic nursing
dialysis nurse
Home infusions
Nurse liaison
Insurance clinical reviewer
Hospice or hospice liaison
Case management
Clinical management
Go to NP school while working for a company that pays for it, then make bank writing scripts

I'm not a nurse but I work in home healthcare, it's my dream job and all the nurses I work with absolutely love it. Zero stress compared to when I was working in hospitals. Depressing as fuck because of the current state of our healthcare system, and seeing patient after patient who got turned into a potato by nursing homes that locked them in a bed for a month to drain all their medicare bucks before sending them home, but at least you can be on the good side helping them get better

That's terrible. So sorry to hear all this. I never even thought about how some patients could just be straight up abusive assholes or even violent, because I am not like that. I am a good hearted patient.

But now that you explain all this I really respect and sympathize with nurses more.

Also, you're at a point in your life where you're at your prime, and you literally have the world in front of you to do whatever you want.

Put your mind and heart into what you what to become, and you will

Also this^

Yeah, unfortunately , in America at least most Hospitals are privately owned and literally fuck the patients financially/time wise any way they can. There was a recent Netflix documentary about how this nurse murdered like 20 people by injecting them with something that couldn't be traced, before they were caught, and it was the Hospital who swept it under the rug because they didn't want a lawsuit. Did anyone see that and know what I'm talking about? It was really crazy how this nurse even pulled it off. Great show but hard to watch. cant' think of the name of it though sorry

After dealing with some pretty serious medical stuff recently, I can for sure say that many hospitals and doctors are absolute crooks, and some of them are actually evil, as in biblical evil.

However, there really are some good nurses, patients, and doctors and people out there, so just get out of the hospitals like Feevers said. A nice comfy Ketamine nurse?

PS- For real question: Ever dressed up as a sexy male nurse and did some sexy stuff? Or no?

Thats awful man! Yikes! Thats no way to live a life...

I've looked into careers recently and one career i considered was a Medical Imaging Tech. It takes 2 years to get certified, maybe less if you are an RN.

My dad only became a bad patient after he got dementia. I'm sure the staff at his nursing home put up with a ton of shit.

@PreparationH you gotta pull out of this line of work before you find something new that's worthwhile. There are two reasons for this:

1: as long as you're busy working, you simply don't have the energy & time to look for something else. So it doesn't get off the ground.

2: you're pretty traumatized by your job (understandably so) and as long as that trauma plays in the foreground, it's going to cloud your decision-making. Distancing yourself from what's happening now will give you a different perspective in which you can more clearly see what's really important to you. It'll help you to decide what you DO want in your work, instead of being preoccupied with what you DON'T want.

The more time you can take to step back from what you're doing now, the better. This is generally determined by economic factors; i.e. how long can you afford to free-wheel? A stop-gap measure could be to pull out of nursing and start working part-time in a gym, and work the bare minimum hours you require to make ends meet. Use the rest of the time to network your way towards new lines of work.

I can't help you figure out what you want to do; the only thing I can say is that it's not going to find you. You'll have to go out and look for it, and in practice, this means (1) talking to lots of people and figuring out what they're doing and what kind of opportunities they can open up for you and (2) (at a later stage) try some things out and see if they fit.

Good luck; I can relate to the situation you're in and it's a tough one. But with a little bit of luck, you can come out the other end a different and happier person.

:fuckyeah:

Yes I am going through a similar thing in my life right now too. It's dang near impossible to job hunt, soul search, and ground yourself when you're still working full time.

I also agree that it would be better for you to be cold and homeless than to keep working this job, because the alternative is you having suicidal thoughts. In otherwords, you might say you can't quit yet because you would lose your place to live, but you're talking about losing your life and sanity here.

I would like to strongly second Koraks advice!

lots of people have already brought up different nursing positions, would definitely add pre-op to a whole lot less stress....

but also if you are willing to go to rural hospitals you can have way less patients, and mostly just surf the web and chat with the other nurses most of your shifts.  if you were already traveling this would be easy to get into.

My sister had a nursing gig putting IV's in for nursing homes.  She had to be on call for 12 hours at a time, if any of the homes needed IV's she drove to them, every IV she attempted (whether success or not) was 75$....

She also got a job teaching nursing students (and then covid hit and she got paid even though it then dropped from 32 hours to 2 hours a week lol)

there are lots of options out there in the field you already have spent all this time on a degree for.

If you really want to change completely then you could start looking into computer/tech stuff.  You can get a lot of certificates online.  Cybersecurity, data analysis, etc.

Finally if you wanted to work for the devil could look into health insurance or pharmaceutical companies, I'm sure you could find something with an RN.
