Puff Ball fungus
    #2862607 - 07/06/04 09:50 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

in Legal Herbs and Chemicals with Psychoactive Properties by:Adam Gottlieb there is this.

GI'-I-SA-WA. -- _Lycoperdon marginatum_ and _L. mixtecorum._ Family
Lycoperdaceae.
Material: Puffball fungus found at high altitudes in temperate
forests in Mexico.
Usage: Puffball and/or spores are ingested.
Active Constituents: Unidentified alkaloid.
Effects: Half-sleep state with non-visual hallucinations (voices,
echoes, and other sound).
Contraindications: None known.
Supplier: Some related species grow wild in USA.

Why is it so hard to find any information on this?

Much appreciated, If they are infact legal and create an enjoyable high, and the health ricks are low, then they may be worth cultivating.

Here is the section of puffballs: "PUFFBALLS (Lycoperdon mixtecorum and L. marginotum) are used by the Mixtec Indicins Of Oaxaca, Mexico as auditory hallucinogens. After eating these fungi, a native hears voices and echoes. There is apparently no ceremony connected with puffballs, and they do not enjoy the place as divinatory agents that the mushrooms do in Oaxaca. L. mixtecorum is the stronger of the two. It is called gi-i-wa, meaning ''fungus of the first quality." L. marginatum, which has a strong odor of excrement is known as gi-i-sa-wa, meaning ''fungus of the second quality.

Although intoxicating substances have not yet been found in the puffballs, there are reports in the literature that some of them have had narcotic effects when eaten. Most of the estimated 50 to 100 species of Lycoperdon grow in mossy forests of the temperate zone. They belong to the Lycoperdaceae, a family of the Gasteromycetes."

Interestesting, I bet it would be real hard to find any other information on this, and even harder to get spores.

Have you eaten dry cubensis?

I've heard some people become revolted at the thought of eating something that grows in an animals shit. [no matter how much I try to explain it]

What??? I find sauteed puffballs quite tasty!

Giant puffballs sliced thickly, dipped in egg, coated in bread crumbs and fried are considered a delicacy in Britain.

when puffball hunting make sure that it IS a pufball.  Many young amanitas can be confused with a puffball.  If unsure cut through to make sure that it's not actually a destoying angel or something.
