When is it OK to judge? * 1
    #28625718 - 01/18/24 09:38 AM (10 days, 5 hours ago)

Inspired by a thread in the sex forum.  We are talking about women displaying their bodies in public and someone is saying that the opinions we have towards these women are just our judgments.

I also remember being on another forum, we were talking about our dating preferences.  Someone said mine was sad, and I responded saying that he shouldn't judge other people's dating preferences.

My point is, it seems like it's human nature to judge.  But there are apparently things that we are not supposed to judge on, and if we do, we get called judgmental.  I am just wondering where exactly the line is.  When is it OK to judge and when is it not?

Judging someone is something we do involuntarily.
Communicating our feeling of judgement is usually a voluntary thing, though.  Exceptions include immediate physical reactions to something that just happened.

As to your questions of when is it okay to judge, I assume you mean voluntarily communicating the judging?

I suppose it's okay if it's to protect someone's health or protect their financial situation, to name two...

The only time it's ok to judge is when it's about yourself.

What if there is a guy who goes to playgrounds and masturbates to the kids there?  We cannot judge him because it's not about ourselves?

That's not judging. That's common sense to stop such things and find the root cause which is most likely a mental disorder.

Edit: if you personally judge their actions without knowing the reason(s) behind them then yes, that is wrong, even if their actions are bad. Now, actions have consequences and I am a firm believer in the death penalty once certain lines are crossed. But again, that is not judging, that is consequences.

To be fair, in order to think someone needs consequences you have to make a judgement... that's why judges are called judges... they judge and give consequences if needed.

Judge all you want, it's practically inevitable as a conscious being.  Just don't be a flippin' dick about dispelling your judgements outside of your own internal dialogue.

It is judging if someone asks you to decide whether such a behavior is good or bad.

Also, it sounds like what you want to do, which is to stop them, is more intrusive than what I want to do, which is merely to judge.  You also need to know that masturbating to the thought of kids is not illegal.  So what you are advocating is not only intrusive, it is also illegal since you would be encroaching on someone's personal freedom.

But anyway, my point isn't about pedophilic urges.  What I am trying to say is that it is not such that we may only judge about ourselves. We judge others constantly.  It's an integral part of being human.  Any time there is more than one human involved eventually there will be judgement of some sort.  Like, I don't know if you have to deal with someone sketchy in your life, but lets say you do, any time you think to yourself, "what a scummy PoS he is", you are judging about others.

Interesting.  This is potentially a good approach as to whether to judge.

I agree with this.  One cannot say, "I am not judging, I am just meting out consequences" because these two things are linked together. Anytime you give a consequence to someone's action, it's only after you have judged it and found it to be bad and in need of correction or punishment in some way.

It's ok to judge if you're getting conned / scammed in some way. People do that all day and are good at it

Generally I don't judge anyone and have nothing against anyone or anything. You do have to be careful for your own well being

It's natural law(example:don't fuck babies. That literally goes against how nature works). It's not my belief, therefore, it is not judging if you are enforcing the natural order.

Its an interesting question that deals a lot in Philosophy and Sociology.

I believe its only Ok to judge someone if what they are doing is obviously a violation of a commonly recongnized social norm.

So using my thread from the Sexuality forum as an example. If a women wears a thong to a kids water park, theres probably going to be some "justified" judgement. But if a woman wears a thong to a seduced beach, judging them will be out-of-place. I think it just comes down to context. In what areas of society are certain behaviours taboo?

I once was at a concert at a State Fair and a woman "snuck" into the mens bathroom to use the toilet. She covered her face in shame (or maybe fear) as she went into and out of the bathroom. Should men judge her for not wanting to wait in a long line for the women's bathroom? Or is it Ok to "break" the rules sometimes without judgment? Is using the other gender's bathroom a breach in the social norms with enough concern to judge them for their desicion? Not an easy question to answer...

There is one situation where i will judge people and thats littering, especially cigs. Way too often, i see people throw LIT cigs out their car windows. It gives me instant road rage. I cant stand it and i judge them harshly but silently in my car. I just cant stand when people are that careless.

When is it ok to express judgements then...
If it personally involves you
If opinions were asked for
If it's a public form where judgements are to be expected
If there is a real or perceived threat

If in doubt, just don't. What gets tiresome are the multitudes of people expressing a single judgement without any intention to interact or learn more about the subject. Why bother? Maybe that's the classic can/should right there.

If you read channeled texts, they all agree that we should never sit in judgement over another. If everything and everyone comes from the same source, then righteousness serves no purpose. We are all here to learn, and we don't know what someone else is learning by doing that thing we don't agree with.

That being said, it is human nature to judge. We can and will evolve, and learn to use our discernment rather than judgement. It's ok if we disagree, and make a choice not to align to the actions of others, but at its core, the teaching is that no one is better than anyone else.

Using judgement in safety issues to me is different then using judgement/ bias to depict how you value a person.
For example
A man masturbating at a children's activity vs a person wearing skimpy clothing
One is safety the other is your own bias

If the guy is just masturbating the child is unharmed, this is the justification parents use to take their kids to pride parades where naked dudes are doing weird shit everywhere.
