Liberty caps in Qld ?
    #28619299 - 01/13/24 12:45 AM (15 days, 5 hours ago)

Never seen these in the flesh... but I believe that I have followed descriptions and pictures posted correctly.
Just need to confirm.

Picked from lush well mown and wallaby grazed grassland at altitude in a forested area.

Trying to collect a spore print despite the shape of the caps.

Slight bluing at base of some.

They are ‘Panaeolopsis’.

While they have/had their own genus (Panaeolopsis), they are actually Panaeolus.

They might be a strange form some Panaeolus species sometimes take on, such as Panaeolus fimicola, and maybe other species as well.

They might contain psilocybin, but it’s unlikely to be much.

Are there any examples of inactive Panaeolous with this mutation?

I believe Alan said these are P. fimicola

I’m not sure that they are all fimicola. I’ve read that others sequenced close to cinctulus.

Thanks heaps guys, I am very interested in having a closer look at these unique little shrooms and the other species growing alongside them.
Also picked a few to test if they have any active compounds... I'll munch out on them soon.
Any suggestions on quantity, or do you think is it just a check and find out deal?

They are unlikely to be strong. Last time I found active Panaeolus, I think five dry grams was underwhelming.

(Edit: fresh mushrooms are around 10x heavier than dry ones)

They’re probably more interesting to sequence than eat.

😆they definitely aren't pan cyans so I might try 5gm and see how I go. Tried a few lower strength active pans and yeah I agree they're a bit underwhelming at 5gm.
I've also got a reasonable tolerance even when I haven't had any for years.
Really like to have them sequenced though too if they are under studied..

If they're cinctulus, they're on par with psilocybe cubensis, which is medium potent. If they're fimicola or something else they're very weak.
Some panaeolus are among the strongest mushrooms there is. Not grass pans, though.

The last ones I found were P. cinctulus growing around a pile of horse dung

I don't find 5g of pan. cinctulus very rewarding either. Try 5g of pan. cyanescens

I've had Pans growing in dung before, picked them in Bali, Indonesia and they were pretty weak.
Good fun hunting though in the fields. They all grew around ban tang cow dung.

Weak? How come? What you found there was probably cyanescens. They're not weak... How much did you have?

I have seen from time to time that people claim they have found wild P. cyanescens to be less potent than usually described.

My uneducated guess is that it might be caused by high oxidation of psilocin. UV radiation is often pretty
high in areas that are favourable for the species, i.e. subtropic to tropic. It can perhaps also be due to genetics.
I suspect wild ones might vary considerably more in potency than cultivated ones, too.

I think it's more likely it's been a bunch of antillarums in their batches. There's been a couple of id requests with antillarums from Bali not long ago as well.
Of course, wild mushrooms vary more than domesticated ones, and you might also be unlucky if you're only having just a few mushrooms. And if they're all from the same mycelium then they're all about the same potency.
I might pick hundreds in a day and they're all mixed together so I won't have this problem and they're always as potent as you'd expect them to be. I also do higher doses than most so I probably wouldn't notice it if there were a few weak ones in there.
I don't think uv has anything to do with it, though. I've picked them in rainy weather and sunshine and never noticed any difference.
