Florida lawn find - help identifying
    #28624661 - 01/17/24 02:40 PM (3 months, 29 days ago)

Hi everyone. I live in Miami & I found these in the back yard. I believe they maybe Panaeolus Olivaceus. Any input would be appreciated.

Other information:
Scent of the mushroom, anything else you think is important, large close-up pictures showing stem, cap and gills.

Panaeolus cinctulus I think.

definitely pans, not sure if they are cinctulus or antillarum though. might be active, might not be

Ants wont grow in lawns though. They only grow from dung.

I bet those are active,  but wait for a TI before consuming

And Panaeolus olivaceus does grow in Florida too,  so I imagine it's either those or cinctulus.

That is my thought.

I would also consider Panaeolus bisporus.

In any case they certainly look like interesting Panaeolus. Probably worth saving a specimens or two for DNA sequencing.

Cool find! And welcome to the Shroomery!

Panaeolus bisporus grows form dung though,  and is very rare,  only found in southern California in the US.

Panaeolus bisporus grows on dung but it does not exclusively grow on dung.

They are rarely identified. It is likely that they are not all that common, but they are probably more common than the number of identified finds would indicate.

On iNat there are more research grade observations of Panaeolus bisporus in the US than there are research grade observations of Panaeolus olivaceus in the world.

These bisporus observations are in Southern California, but also Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Florida.

Here is one from Florida where they were growing in a lawn.

Thanks for the input everyone. If it helps, my yard is filled with dog poop (dung). I just wanted to make sure they are edible and psychedelic.

Panaeolus bisporus is a copelandia in the cyanescens complex. It bruises blue like a cyanescens. These don't. These are some sort of lawn pans.
Bisporus might be much more common than we think and is probably mistaken for cyanescens quite often, along with tropicalis, cambodginiensis and axfordii.

Dogshit has nothing to do with these mushrooms.
They're safe to eat and they might be mildly or weakly active. Please report back to us after, the potency could help us narrow it down further!
Have a nice trip! (If you get one, that is )

I reckon without proper DNA sequencing,  we will never know what they are,  and all we can all do is speculate.

Panaeolus cinctulus group

Would be good ones to send in for DNA barcoding: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1nSKlouFy1Z3OXbCf2cWiKH0hkDnFKZvPn6_oCr3vEK0/edit

Nice find!
Did you get these sequenced or microscoped?

Microscopy confirmed and samples sent to Doc T for DNA.

That's really cool. They really do look like cyanescens, at least in this state. Bet many, myself included, have picked these taking them for cyanescens.
