I'm planning on going because of me knowing Ahab McBathsalt's avatar for many years, but didn't know where it was from since I never saw the movie.

It's a masterpiece. I'm seeing Eyes Wide Shut next month on big screen

Meh. Hands down Kubrick's worst movie. It was released after his death and I wonder if it would have been if he had still been alive, at least in the form we know it. It's a mediocre piece of Hollywood cinema, while each and every other movie by Kubrick is thought-provoking, unsettling and somehow surprising.

Agreed. Eyes wide shut was pretty boring in my opinion. Deer Hunter had a lot more going on for it philosophically and psychologically. They also brought in a really rare, beautiful European stag. Something you would never see in North America.

It's been ages since I've seen the Deer Hunter, so I need to rewatch it.
We've got this system where my fiancee and I decide on which movies we'd like to watch and if we both agree, we put them on a list. Whenever we've got time to watch one, we draw a random one from the list. Works very well. Deer Hunter is on our list, so I expect it'll have its turn in the next few weeks.
We make a point out of watching lots of classics just to see what the fuss was all about. Many of them turn out to be mediocre at best. Some are just hilarious if you watch them today, but it's easy to see how they were once impressive or provoking. We watched Hitchcock's The Birds recently, which was funny as hell by today's standards.
So some movies don't stand the test of time too well; what I recall from the Deer Hunter is that it does, though. And DeNiro is a great actor, there's just no argument there.

Don't get me wrong, Deer Hunter is a great flick. But there's a lot of boring, wandering nonsense that has nothing to do with anything. It could be cut to standard 90-120 minute feature length and not lose anything of value, IMHO.

I'll have to rewatch it to make up my mind about that, but it's possible.
I was discussing Full Metal Jacket with a friend some weeks ago and he argued that the first half is solid, but the second half he considered 'just another Vietnam war movie'. Well, I don't agree on that bit from a cinematographic sense, and also because of the inherent irony and the poignant ending. But more importantly, I pointed out that the first half wouldn't have been half as impressive without the second half.
So sometimes you need something in there that doesn't seem to make sense on its own, but that's required for something else to stand out. It's like an image of a very bright/light scene; it's much more impressive and looks brighter if you've got a dark area to contrast with it. You gotta view the whole thing in context. Maybe that applies here as well. As said, I'll need to rewatch it.

Spoiler alert
Deer Hunter is a very very strange movie. I dont know if the director intended the confusion or not. The first 2 hours of the movie is just a wedding scene with a hunting scene that makes zero sense, and the rest is in vietnam till Walken dies and then its back in USA for a bit while everyone grieves Walken in some pretty sad scenes and then its over.

Barry Lyndon I found mildly interesting, partly because of its cinematography (which is legendary) and indeed, for the era in which it was made, it's remarkable. And in part because of the long-spun story which has an unusual way of exploring a personality, the way we generally only see in literature. Seeing this work (because it does indeed work) in a movie is quite interesting. But it's a long-drawn story and by today's standards, it's rather slow-paced. Haven't seen Lolita; thanks for the reminder. I think we looked into it but didn't find a streaming service that carried it last time we checked, which must have been a few years ago already.

Agreed. Eyes wide shut sucks balls, and I'm a bit kubrick fan, I've got Alex tattooed on my leg
