Lions mane spawn jars
    #28616297 - 01/10/24 11:46 AM (18 days, 5 hours ago)

Does anyone have a successful spawn jar recipe for Lions Mane? I am very new to this & have just started with cubes, but want to expand my mycology collection to include medicinal and gourmet mushrooms. I see plenty of TEKs for every stage of cubes, but not so much for gourmets. Maybe I’m looking in all the wrong places. TIA, any input is appreciated and super helpful for this aspiring noob.

I use rye for my lions mane spawn. Whatever grain you're using for your cubes will work fine for them.

Just make sure you dont keep your jars sitting around for too long after full colonization before spawning because lions mane likes to start pinning pretty immediately.

i use rye as well.  can confirm, LM loves to fruit before the jar is fully colonized.

After the grains are colonized, what do you spawn to?

I use dust blocks with oat or wheat bran.

I spawn to bags of masters mix, which is a 50/50 mix of hardwood pellets and soy hull pellets.

I've been seeing a lot of metabolites in some of my bags recently, which I'm thinking is due to some bacterial contam of the the soy hulls during spawning.

My current SAB is too short and makes for some pretty rough transfers, so next run I'm going to experiment with leaving out the Soy hulls and just adding more colonized spawn to replace that lost nutrition. Ive heard of people doing this before but have never seen any results or comparisons to the masters mix.

You didn't ask for that extra info but there it is..

I use rye for spawn and a mix of 40%hardwood dust, 40%hardwood chips and 20% wheat bran in my bags. Works good for me

I mostly use rye, but just got some lions mane on oats, so mixed up some oats for a grain to grain transfer and it's all colonizing pretty fast. Oats are pretty cheap and maybe not the best overall, but it's working out great..

Hi - just dropping into this thread as Im having trouble finding a reliable tek on the subject of growing Lions Mane, maybe someone here can help.

Regarding the spawning of lions mane;.had good success with cubes and am presently trying lions mane to no success.  Ive used an LC from a reliable source.  Three rye jars each with a bit of coffee and gypsum thrown in;  jars have been incubating at approx 23 degrees C (73 F) for a week now and nothing doing - not a whisper.

I read somewhere that Lions Mane fruits to cooler temps than cubes.  But how about incubating grain jars?

Ive just started another batch of rye for jars without coffee or gypsum…

Cubes LC to grain at same time going along nicely.

Am I just being impatient?

Im willing to bet you've got some growth in your jars. LM mycelium can be almost invisible on grain sometimes but it's there.

I inoculated some grain on 1/8 with 2cc of LC per jar and have shaken it twice since then. Both times I shook there were clumps of colonized grains that needed to be broken up but you had to look real hard to see the fine wispy mycelium. Here's one of the jars today a few days away from full colonization.

Once it reaches full colonization or close to it you'll notice it will get thicker and more visible before almost immediately going into fruiting. So you want to try and spawn right as you see the mycelium starting to thicken up but before pinning starts. At least that's what I do. They'll colonize fine at your temp.

The Official Hericium Thread has some good info in it.

Great thanks for advise.  Ill sit tight, watch and wait….

As matter of interest, and I realise this could be genetics led - but what sort of time span might I be looking for for colonization of quart jars?

I'll update here with a pic of that same jar before I spawn so you can see what I mean about thickening up.

Ive been averaging about 3 weeks from inoculation to spawn with LC but I only use a cc or 2 and its been really cold and dry here.

Using more LC and better conditions you'd probably be closer to 2 weeks depending on if you shake or not. Maybe give it a few more days and then try and give it a shake and see if you notice the colonized chunks like I mentioned.

Good question.  This batch I soaked rye for about 18 hours then lightly simmered for ten minutes.  I threw a handful of gypsum in and also a handful of coffee.

I did NOT clean the grain prior - which is a first, normally I rinse it and put it through a strainer - but I didn't and I do regret that, it looks filthy.

Dried on a board for several hours before into jars with injection port and stick on air vents.

PC 15 psi 90 mins.

Pe from LC and a blue meany cube  from agar in same grain going fine.  Did the injections /transfer bout a week ago, do have the date on the jars but Im not there now to confirm exact date.

Ive just prepped another batch today - this one i have rinsed/cleaned, soaked for bout 16 hours, simmered for ten mins.  No coffee no gypsum, trying to keep it simple…..

Oh - 5 mg lc per jar

those all seem like good parameters for making the grain sterile. i don't believe the grain prep would be the issue if this is your method. even if not ideally clean, it shouldn't be an issue.
