Nope still don’t trust those
I think it’s just something about the open caps. The smaller ones have more nat shaped caps but the big ones look like cubes
Take a pic of the underside of those big caps when you harvest.

Sometimes they’re stretched thin and shred themselves too. I’ll take a pic of gill attachment tonight at harvest Still waiting for verified nat spores to germ. 11 days and nothing yet

Agree with this. My nats break veil while they are very small. The veil ring is usually quite a bit farther down the stem.

Some mutations can cause cubes to have gills extended down the stipe.
Those look very cubensis to me.

Great to meet everyone! I'm new to this thread and to growing natalensis.
Sharing a few pics of my current grow (print > agar > millet > coir/verm).

I had a buddy take care of these tubs while I was out of town, and he managed to nearly kill them (cold temps, no watering, etc.). Fortunately, I was able to bring them back to life, although they do look a little sad.
What's the general consensus on when to harvest? As soon as they start dropping spores?
Thanks, and excited to be apart of this new community!

i've seen many comments say to harvest once the spores start dropping.
this is my first successful box o' noodles and a few started to splooge today, thinking they'll get the chop tonight went better than i expected for an ms tub, hopefully some cloning gets a messier canopy. seemed weird how the veils didn't really attach to the stipes. they just kind of pulled away and mostly disappeared

The gills going down the stipe shows up in varying levels also, it’s just one of the identification factors. Usually for me the smallish caps with the yellow/grey on top is what gives it away.
Like if you compare eniqmas to the two post right after you can see what I mean.
That said, they’re very closely related to cubes and have a gigantic range of phenos in the genetics as I found out when I started doing my breeding project and it’s definitely very possible you just have cubey caps and veils. Cuz like I said the smaller ones in that tub do have more of the natal shape.
We had a lot of this years ago too before it was verified as a separate species and there was still a lot of NSS cubes in the mix. Most of us just ditched anything ambiguous and got spores from a definite natalensis grow and eventually all the confusion faded out.
Took some spores from the biggest one here, think I’ll prob start them and see what I get for my next natal run coming up

A.k.a said: I’ve definitely had a few cultures that grew thick like that on plates. Looks ok to me but I’d bet you get some wild overlay.
That's the plan for this lot! Those plates are clones from this nightmare overlay tub as a bit of a novelty grow.
Planning on spawning to a different tub that will make harvesting clean overlay a bit easier.

Nats are really forgiving.
This is both to share an unexpected success, but also for info in case others make similar errors & wonder what options they have.
A couple of months ago I inoculated a few jars, but after a few days they stalled.
They looked really dry & I decided I'd not sufficiently hydrated the millet. They sat on a shelf, glaring at me.
Three weeks ago I was about to throw them out, but decided instead to try adding water. I PCd some spring water in a flask, then added a generous splash to each jar (in the SAB), shook them up a bit and left them to it.
By last weekend they'd all fully colonised! In view of their journey I was far from confident in the spawn quality, so spawned to 4 shoeboxes at about 1:3 ratio with a thin pseudocasing. This is where they're at today.
Dry and stalled > rehydrated > spawned in 2 weeks, colonised and pinning after another week.

Do you all harvest nats as soon as the veil opens? They seem to release spores slower so IDK if there is good growth potential after

They drop their veil early, I've seen the veil on the bottom 1/2 of the stipe or lower.
