Live Oaks and Lions Mane

howdy.. brand new here.. growing Lions Mane indoors and wild Maitake outdoors...

So I have giant old oaks in my yard with a few dead limbs and a few live limbs that need cut back.. I was thinking to sterilize the old limbs (chipped) in the oven, i guess... (looking for feedback)

as i understand from what i've read that the new branches should be fine as they are if they are used right away after cutting/chipping or maybe just pasterized at the most...

I thought the mix of old and new might be good.. I also have bran to boost substrate... any thought on this plan?

hi hua

so using the old limbs would most likely prove unproductive as they most likely already have wild fungi inhabiting them. you might kill that fungi in the oven, but i am not sure how successful it would be to use them to grow other strains. better to save yourself the time and frustration and just use it as firewood.

as for the new limbs, have you considered inoculating them with spawn plugs to grow mushrooms out of the limbs themselves?  if you cut them into about 3ft sections, that's the proper size for log cultivation.

you could also do as you suggested, chip up the new logs, pasteurize them with boiling water, and then inoculate them. Using buckets is a really easy way to go for that.  you would want to process the chips pretty quickly after chipping them, as most likely they'll pick up spores when going through the chipper (like don't leave them to sit for 2 months while you get organized).

thanks for the thoughts, I will be growing the lions mane indoors for now, but hope to set up a colony in the spring with logs.. the tree i am harvesting from now grows wild maitake around the base that we collect each fall, I want to get lions mane producing as quickly as possible as we are using that medicinally, and for good food :smile: we have considered farming a few quicker strains as income supplement to further that cause :smile: probably oysters of some strain.I will be doing some experimenting for various experience to go with the many books i have been reading... I am very green, but my head may explode from all the knowledge i have absorbed on the subject  over the last weeks..

hi hua,

yes, the learning curve is steep and really as steep as you want to make it.  i still feel overwhelmed by what i learn, but that's part of the fun. especially since you can find something that works and share that with others since this is somewhat new, and mushrooms are certainly coming onto the main stage right now. 

that said, the limbs you are cutting are most likely already infused with maitake mycelium which is amazing.  i would cut the healthy limbs and leave them to do their thing.  they may just produce some maitake for you since you are cutting off their lifesource and the mycelium can take over and start digesting the wood.  very cool.

oysters and lion's mane are my bread and butter. they are some of the easiest to grow and people love em.  once you get a sense of things, try checking out more varieties.  have fun with it!
