ID Request, Victoria
    #28617083 - 01/11/24 01:44 AM (17 days, 4 hours ago)

Habitat:
Growing on horse dung in sclerophyll forest to the west of Melbourne

Gills:
Not attached to the stipe, dark brown in colour

Stem:
Varying from off white to light brown. Stems are quite tough and did not break off when uprooted.

Cap:
Conical, brown in colour.

Spore print color:
No spore print taken yet.

Bruising:
No obvious bruising.

Other information:

Found in early to mid January, which is an unusual time to find any mushrooms in Victoria. However, given that these were found on horse dung just a few days after an unseasonable downpour of rain, I thought they might be Psilocybe Aluteucia. I guess the other possibility is that they are Demonica Copricilica.

Panaeolus papilionaceus is likely.

Yeah I think they look like Pans too.

Some close up photos of the caps and gills would help to confirm.

P. papilionaceus is very common in manure, year round if the conditions allow.

The most likely contender for dung loving actives in your region is Psilocybe alutacea, which
appears mainly to be fruiting from late April through June - July, but I see that people have found
it in Victoria in March, and on one occasion even as early as late January.

So you can probably keep checking similar habitats, you might get lucky although I wouldn't expect anything yet.
