How are you making your agar?
No pour, about 1/4 inch thick and PC for a couple hours. No problems with contamination before inoculation.
One thing I’m going to change is my flame sterilization of the blade. I’ve been hitting it with the flame until it glows red from tip to about halfway up the blade. Maybe I’ll try heating until the entire blade is red.
I’m not sure that it has anything to do with contamination. What kind of temps are you storing them in?

Some of the best mush I’ve had barely bruised at all and some that bruised heavily didn’t do fackall.

QQ to anyone who stores their grain in 5 gallon buckets with lids. How many would I need to store 50lbs of oats?

Hi.
I notice nobody impulse-seals grain bags before sterilising in the PC. Does it pop off the breathing patch when the air in the bag expands? If you could heat the PC slowly allowing air to leave through the patch, that would be a much more sterile process than sealing after, so I suppose there is a good reason people don't do it. Any lessons learned? I'm in no mood to lose a bag if someone else has tested this already.
Thanks in advance

Correct. Sealing beforehand could cause the bag to be damaged. Plus if you're inoculating with agar you would have to unseal and reseal which adds extra steps to the process adding more vectors for contamination.

I have this tub of AA+ that I posted about a few days ago, that is having "issues" (suspected bacterial contamination). The biggest fruits are now fully opened and it's not sporulating (as bitfootscreepyuncl suspected). I'm wondering what I should do with it.

Harvest? Trash? Let go?
If Harvest: Harvest in full? Harvest just the biggest?
If Harvest in full: soak and attempt a second flush? Trash?
Here are some close-ups. To get an idea of scale, this is a 20qt tub. Filtered holes are 2"

I'd harvest anything with an open cap, broken veil, or close to breaking. Maybe let it go another day or two after that to see if any of the bigger pins are going to keep growing. If they open their caps as well, sweet. If they aren't growing or are big aborts, I would pick them. A lot of those bigger pins look like they are aborting to me.
Then either heavily mist for a couple days or bottom water to rehydrate.
Trash once you have something better needing the space.

Is anyone familiar with a strain called Cottonmouth? I cannot find any info on it. A friend will be trip-sitting someone who is taking that stuff, and the sitter wants to learn what he can. Neither of us can find any info on it. No idea if it's a cube or who knows what.
(There is a "cottonwood" edible mushroom and we will make sure the guy didn't pick some of those expecting medicinal journey!)

Asked on another thread too. My BRF cakes are fruiting on the bottom. They are in a water tub, sitting on aluminium btw. Any idea why that may be?

There was enough moisture and oxygen to promote pinning down there. Likely the most suitable place for them to form. Your conditions could probably be better.
Was your cake covered in moisture?

Well, visually if didn't look bad, there certainly were beads of water. Is it possible that the bottom just offered better conditions? If not, I dont see much that I could do apart from misting, but I thought that we shouldn't have to mist when fruiting in a water tube 🤔

If you read the tek it mentions having to mist every few days at least. But yeah that's exactly what happened. The best conditions were on the bottom because water evaporates slower and collects.

Yeah. Just like when growing in a tub you can end up with sidepins. Just part of the game.
The best you can do is keep the best conditions on the top of the cake and try to romote primordia to form there. After rehydration you will likely find pins forming in different spots as well.

If the pins are small just flip the cake over. I check my cakes for pins when I take them out of the jar. Pins go up.

Guys, I think I've found why I got this issue. I believe I didn't soak the verm layer well enough after dunking, so the water that pooled on the bottom was enough to encourage pinning there. Am I close to the truth here?
