Monotub on its side to deal with matted surface - second flush
    #28615431 - 01/09/24 03:55 PM (18 days, 15 hours ago)

Hello,

First grow here but wanted to add my experience.

3lb colonized spawn of blue meanie in what looked like bird seed mix.

5kg of their pre-made fruiting sub. (Vermiculite, coco coir, worn castings, peat, and… check their website for recipe)

Separated to 2 monotubs.

Mistakes… misted too much. Mass amounts of condensation fell onto the sub, which I cleaned off and dried but matted the surface. Subsequently, it only pinned from the outer edges.

The bins i used didn’t have a good seal and one got fruit flies. The one tub developed black mold and a spot of trich. This one was discarded.

This brings us to the sideways monotub. Research on the forum was mixed, but most said don’t flip. But I did see some promising results from a sideways monotub.

The uncontaminated tub was soaked for 3 hours.

The original container was used, inside pastywhyte’s 1/4 hole mono-tub tek. The slab pressure fit to stand up. The slab had a lot of holding power on its own (didn’t break when I flipped it), just needed a way to keep standing.

Here are a few pics and I will update its progress.

This is something I have not seen before, looks almost like something honeybees would produce in a hive.

Isnt it against the forum rules to advertise where you got your stuff from though?

Thank you,

The source has been edited out.

I saw a few of these sideways monos on the forum. I hope it works out!

Update:

A few days in:

I covered the bottom 2 holes on each end of the monotub leaving three 1/4” holes. And one at the bottom that looked like it was responsible for a lot of air flow. It’s dry in the winter, so I made that fine adjustment.

6 days later:

First pick is from 2 days ago. Second is today.

You can see new mycelium growing throughout the original bottom side. Zero pins noted from the matted original top side.

I speculated I would see pins from the sides but nothing yet.

I possibly didn’t soak the substrate long enough. I did 3 hours. I have been misting daily to make sure it isn’t drying out, considering it is on its side and there is more surface area exposed. I will continue to update.

Should I give up and put it on its back or keep with it some more?

It’s been 13 days for this experiment. More of the side surface is white.

Thanks for the opinions.

I would try to handle it as little as possible, it looks like it's trying to recover. Give it some more time and you might be really happy.

The more you handle it the higher chance you have of breaking it and the longer it's going to take if you change it again.

Nice job btw I can't say I've ever seen that before I'm impressed it worked without falling apart.

The downside is it will dry out easier but how cool would it be to have pins on all sides.

Looks like its stalled/recovering to me. Maybe drier than your previous post, hard to tell for me as I have little experience.
From what I have read elsewhere, it could be its too dense in the centre so its having a hard time colonizing there. (like packing a BRF jar too much?)
How is the other side looking and what is the temperature?
Patience is though the key in this hobby, I wouldnt give up yet.

I would advice you to read up on Identifying proper surface conditions if you have not already.

Hopefully someone else can help you better then I can.

EDIT: Maybe you didnt soak it long enough and its dry below the surface, that means misting wont help as far as I understand.

I agree. It will dry out easier than I’d like.

Thanks for the input.

The other side is matted pretty densely from over spraying and drying.

I had read that the pins might come through that side on a second flush due to dormant pins that might have been created . So I was trying to give it the benefit of the doubt.

I don’t think I soaked it long enough, however I didn’t get a great first flush so I thought it still had a decent amount of moisture as it was also heavy when I handled it.

Having it stand up, it will dry out so it will compound that problem if it wasn’t soaked enough.

The temp is fairly low. Likely low 60s over night. 70ish during the day.

Dry here in the winter but moist within its environment. Been dropping water on the new top (old side) during the day to encourage moisture to go in. Likely futile when I think about it!  Misting the surfaces lightly from a distance.

Patience was a problem when I first set it up, but I have agar cultures from fruit on the first flush growing. It’s a hobby so I have time!

Appreciate the input. Thanks

I wouldn't worry about it too much, too much moisture can cause more bad than good and it should have plenty of moisture in it to fruit.

Your only concern might be surface moisture for encouraging pins but that's more a part of tub humidity.

An ultrasonic humidifier would be ideal if your having problems with humidity.

If the other side is matted then just flip it completely over. You’re not going to get an even surface humidity with it up like that. I suspect that’s why the myc is doing better on the bottom. Personally I always add a new thin casing layer in between flushes. I have found it gets the myc going again. Stalls are almost never a problem.

Would you soak it again or lay it down and case it?

Depends on how moist it is. You can tell by how heavy the cake is. What I personally do is after each flush I clean the cakes off really well and run them under, almost “massaging them” I stopped dunking them a few years back. The reason I like to add more casing is because it’s hydrated. I add a thin layer on the bottom of my shoebox, put the cake In then a thin top layer and fill in the sides. After a day or two you will see the myc taking over the coir and starting the entire process over again.
