I just got a Mossberg 500 Retrograde to bring back with me to california. * 2
    #28615354 - 01/09/24 02:40 PM (19 days, 29 minutes ago)

My real estate broker/agent friend in california has a 20 acre off grid lot for me to stay at for free (as long as I invest in the land, I would only need to pay for my own things like propane, satellite, etc.) I'm not moving until 12 months, I have a lease on a shitty apartment in texas right now. The only thing there on the property now is an RV, a well, and a small bathroom. Water holding tanks and water pumps are being installed next week, eventually there will be solar and when I get there I will be "roughing it" a little bit but I'm going to have a tiny house built, plant crops, and eventually probably have a fully legal grow op and sell to dispensaries and individuals/medical patients. It's about 20 miles away from the nearest suburban area where there are grocery stores, a gym so I can take a shower, etc. My friend is going to be doing a lot of things in the meantime until I get there so it will be a little more "ready" for me.

Anyway, I'll need a nice shotgun to protect the property from trespassers. It's way easier and faster to buy a gun in texas so I figured I'd get a nice shotgun here. I wanted the mossberg shockwave but that's illegal in california because they don't allow short barrel shotguns (no matter what the atf classification is) because they are "easier to conceal." So I have to get a real shotgun.

I was looking at either the maverick 88, mossberg 500 retrograde (I love the dark walnut wood hardware), or the Winchester sxp defender marine. After quite some reading and videos, I decided on the 500 retro because it's way more durable than the 88 and a little bit better for hunting if I EVER want to get into hunting. And honestly I was already sold on the dark walnut wood, position of the safety clicker, and softer stock pad. I paid $440 for the gun and $20 for shipping to the ffl dealer. Strangely, there were no taxes. Just shipping to the ffl. Every other website was selling the same gun for at least $500-$600 before fees.

A lot of people complained about the trigger release breaking on the winchester so I said fuck that. Someone else also stated that the chrome is just some bullshit fake silver paint crap that looks cheap. I also don't think I would like the hand pump moving back after a shot is taken.

The maverick 88 would have been "good enough" for my use and especially a first gun, but I don't go for "good enough." I hope I won't ever have to use this on a person to defend myself but there is an outdoor range near where I will be living in california where I can practice at.

If I lived somewhere I had to protect myself with a gun I'd just move. Doesn't sound like its worth it to me.

Why not an AK47 chambered in 7.62 NATO or 30-06 Win?

Even in Texas it doesnt get much more Get Off My Lawn than that.

I honestly don't think I'll ever need to use it...but I will eventually have a grow op....so, ya know. And I also said that I might start hunting later on if I feel like it. I also said that I could practice and have fun at a range. So I mean, you can use a gun for more than just killing someone.

To be honest, I've been on the fence about gun rights for awhile because my step dad would watch these videos on guns, gun rights and gun laws and it sort of got me interested in guns and to be honest, if I'm a god damn american, I should buy a gun anyway because it's my god damn right. Plus it's way easier and faster in texas. In california, you have to take a gun class and do all this stuff just to buy a gun.

Do you know how many rifles are illegal in california? I don't even want to bother checking. I love the hand rack on a shotgun anyway and love the old style look of the walnut wood. I like being able to HEAR the gun getting a bullet into the chamber and it just sounds and looks sexy. I like the look of a shotgun anyway. And plus, I want a 12 gauge so that if I DO have to shoot a motherfucker, they will be DEAD so they can't come after me in civil court for their medical bills.

update: Oh ok, so there are ca legal ak47s but I heard they have a lot of KICK. No thanks for the recoil. I also don't really want a pistol grip.

I grew up with guns in a rural community, it was normal but almost exclusively used in hunting. In our community there wasn't much fear of intruders or a narritive around using guns for self protection or revolution. It was like how people talk about the old days, parking your truck with a gunrack and gun in the highschool parking lot and going hunting after school...

Yeah, I really don't think I'll need to use it because it's an off grid location and nobody is going to go out of their way when they don't don't even know I'm there to begin with.

I bought it more just because of the videos my step dad would watch and so I just feel as an american I should be armed just because I can. If more people were armed and were allowed to carry, there would be less public muggings because people would be afraid of getting shot.

To me it would just escalate things. Pulling a gun out in a threatening way is just asking for someone to shoot me. Maybe I can shoot them faster then they can shoot me. In any case, it makes it much more likely someone will get shot. I'd rather be mugged than kill someone.

If lived and traveled in some dangerous places too, like Kashmir and south side Chicago. I think keeping your wits about you and using good judgement is the best protection.

It's 20 acres and has a no trespassing gate.

I would never show a weapon unless I planned to shoot immediately and I would only shoot if they came on the property and were obviously fucking around. Only put your finger on the trigger if you intend to shoot right then. I'd be able to see them at a distance and can make a judgement call. I'll probably have several hiding places in which I can use a gun to kill a threatening motherfucker. I mean, of course, I'm going to read up on all of california gun laws and WHEN you can actually legally shoot a motherfucker.

And I keep saying, this will most likely be used as a range toy more than anything else. I really don't think I'll ever have to shoot a motherfucker ever.

I'm not moving until 12 months anyway. Tomorrow I'm going to a range to shoot my first gun ever virgin style. Start with like a .22 and work my way up to a shotgun. See what the recoil is like and work on my stance. Not sure if I can do that all in a day but we'll see. I'm going with a couple cool coworkers.

Guns for home defense feels a bit intense but I can’t judge; id be nervous with a big grow too.

I will say this: a kid where I’m from got shot and killed because he drove with his friends onto someone’s property in the boonies thinking it was the address of a party they were going to.

No Trespassing signs aren’t always gonna keep someone from ending up on your property and then your perception of whether they are sketchy or not is what determines if they  get shot or not

My ex had a white ford van and we were going camping. She went to get something and I got a call from her a little while later saying she pulled over to check her phone and a woman was holding her at gun point from another car because she 'looked suspicious'.

I called the cops and walked to where her car was. The woman left when the cops arrived. Then the cops wanted to search our van, and when they found out we were visiting from chicago started talking shit about democrats and how evil they were. I was upset that they were doing this after my girlfriend had just been held at gunpoint.

I don't trust gun advocates or cops lol.

I own my own property and own firearms. I don't think everyone should be carrying all the time. I've had my conceal carry licence forever and I've only carried maybe 2 times and that was a personal occurrence that my mother was helping somebody out of a bad relationship so I went with her and took one of my pistols, but other than rare situations like that I don't really think carrying a gun daily is necessary

I'll most likely get some sort of intercom and camera system once this thing gets going. I'm not just going to shoot a motherfucker. Especially in california when I need to make damn sure they're a threat before and if I shoot. I don't know how a whole car would jump a locked fence with a no trespassing sign but I would definitely scope people out, ask them what they're doing, tell them I live there and then ask them to leave. But honestly, nobody is going to find me.

A lot of people shouldn't own guns. I've been robbed at gun point myself. It happened when I was working for this jackasses marijuana delivery service when I went to the wrong neighborhood and nobody told me not to go. But what the fuck is the government/local law enforcement doing about black market guns?

I've read comments online of people who supposedly have lived in the projects or ghetto and a couple of them stated that one day they woke up and there was a box of guns just sitting in the street. They think it came from the CIA as a social experiment.

I mean, california writes their own gun laws but they don't do anything to prevent thugs and gangsters from getting guns. If anything, california is only perpetuating its own state's gun violence by making it harder to get a gun legally and easier to get it via black market.

Exactly.

I had an old dealer in texas who had a legally owned rifle. I knew him well and I know he would never use it on me unless I pulled some super fast shit on him like trying to rob him literally. He lived in a nice house with his mom in a nice neighborhood. But he had the gun up against his wall where he always sat to weigh out the weed and put it in a bag.

I think a lot of people in texas are real big on gun safety, surprisingly and slightly ironically. As a native californian, I originally thought texans were crazy about their guns and they all just loved fucking shooting and killing each other. But it turns out, most people are crazy about gun safety and a lot of people are serious about having a good gun specifically for home defense.

Like I've said, I really don't think I'll ever need to use this on a person. I really just bought it "just in case" but mostly as a range toy and possibly maybe to use as hunting later on but mostly because I'm a god damn American exercising my 2nd amendment right to get a gun, and if there's a better time to get a gun, it's while I'm living in texas. I figure, I better buy a gun before I can't. I MIGHT buy a handgun later in the year but honestly, I don't know why, handguns scare me. It's hard to tell if they're loaded, it's hard to tell if it's unloaded. I feel like a shotgun is more straight forward and all you have to do is keep racking it until all the bullets fall out. My step dad's gun videos got me interested in guns and gun rights and I've been on the fence about gun rights for awhile now. And also, if people ever can't buy a gun, I will have one already.

This type of thought process is akin to not wanting a fire extinguisher.

You are literally not safe anywhere on planet Earth.  Having a gun is a safety measure, like an airbag.

I don't think a firearm automatically makes you safer. I think it requires a lot of training and preparation. Like say an armed robber breaks into my house. Its not in their interest to kill me if I am unarmed, but if they see I'm armed, suddenly its very much in their interest to kill me. Then we can have a gun fight.

I think its very unlikely that someone will try to kill me and there will be a situation where having a gun and the training will help me.

Having a gun makes it more likely for people to kill themselves, and for domestic disputes turn into homicide.

I could see maybe for someone who trained in close quarters combat regularly, perhaps they might be safer, especially if they were a very stable person who never had thoughts or desires of suicide.

I think the time and energy spent training in CQB would be better put towards healthy eating, abstaining from alcohol, exercising regularly.
