Fanaticus was my first in '97-98. Didn't grow again for a couple years later than it was Sporeworks. Good memories!

You don't have to order spores in syringes. It's ridiculously easy to take a spore print, and turn it into a spore syringe, with some water, a sterile syringe and needle from a local pharmacy, and a loop of wire. As far as I know, this was part of the original PF tek. It's definitely discussed in detail in the 'let's grow mushrooms' educational videos. I see why people have syringes mailed, but honestly I just prefer lower risk to the convenience.
Personally, I have gotten my first spore print from a friend.. Then after having fallen off for a few years, I got a new print on aluminum foil from a spore exchange. Then I just kept taking prints from my own produce, and getting some other genetic varieties from friends again... I'd imagine this is how it looked back before the Internet, too.

Late 80's, east coast, I didn't even know that people grew psychoactive mushrooms. All I knew about/experienced was stuff that got picked from cowpastures.
I found and ordered the Magic Mushroom Grower's Guide from Loompanics Unlimited in 1990. In it, they gave the address for a company you could mail-order cubensis prints from: Fungi Perfecti. Now everyone knows who Paul Stamets is, and Fungi Perfecti stopped selling cubensis prints a long time ago. I also didn't know at the time that "Oss and Oeric" (the pen-names used for MMGG) were actually Stamets and McKenna. I ordered a print, but alas my grow was unsuccessful.
First successful grow was in 2000, with syringes ordered from Psilocybe Fanaticus.

This guide? https://files.shroomery.org/attachments/21974544-Magic%20mushroom%20growers%20guide%20-%20Oss%20&%20Oeric.pdf I don't think Stamets had anything to do with it, I thought it was just Dennis and Terrence together? https://www.erowid.org/library/books/psilocybin_magic.shtml

I remember there being advertisements in High Times and other such magazines, although that was back before I had ever tried a psychedelic so I never did it myself, I just remember the existence of the ads.

Psilocybe Fanaticus or The Hawks Eye in back of High Times magazine. Shroomery was around as well as mycotopia and others. The free spore ring, free spore ring Europe, and others was sending them world wide for $1-3 a print slide.
There were some radicals around the scene that wanted to spread the spore to everyone. Overgrow, an idea of growing more pot plants than LEO can destroy, seemed to be an inspiration.
I was here when Hippie3s Dunk Tek first hit. Originally, you could make a 1 percent bleach solution during the dunk and get rid of surface contams. It worked. Nanook is the guy that pioneered pressure cooking peruvian torch cactus into a syrup to make it easier to eat.
The 90s were hot.

Ohhh yeah, you might be right.
I think I got it twisted around in my head because, at that time, I didn't know they were all buddies.

Fuck, now we need overgrow again. But for the corporate fuckwits and amoral profiteers. Everyone who lives in a legal state and smokes should at least try to grow their legal allotment.
But yeah, we all stand on the shoulders of giants...
