P. Mairei update, mature specimen
    #28612020 - 01/06/24 05:22 PM (21 days, 16 hours ago)

From my last visit on december the 17th i left behind some small mushrooms to grow, came back today and found them like this.
Are they supposed to live that long? there was no rain till yesterday.

Psilocybe species are generally quite hardy, but these certainly look like they've been spending  several weeks outdoors.
Nice find, and I'd say if these aren't synonymous with P. serbica, at least they are very closely related.

What about consumption of very old specimen?
And is potency afftected by age?

Yes. Fresh, young fruits are stronger. Heavy rain and scorching sun will also make them loose potency. These looks good, though.
I don't think they're 3 weeks old, they'd probably dry out in your climate long before that.

Three weeks is quite a long time, true. But they might dry out and then get rehydrated when the rains come back.
I see this quite a bit, and more chunky species can hold on for quite a while, although they get quite ugly looking.

I see pans drying out all the time here and they never rehydrate. And this climate is way more humid than Algeria. Maybe psilocybes are different. But I would assume they'd get all blue and black like the pans.
I've seen bigger, non-active mushrooms rehydrate, even semilanceatas, but they weren't all that dry and they don't turn blue.

Reminds me of my serbica find from Jagodnja mountain, Serbia.

Firstly I want to say it’s great seeing mairei finds being posted! I have only seen photos from a few finds from North Africa, and it is great seeing more!

Now jumping in with the weeks long drying out and rehydrating discussion, Psilocybe weraroa is the only active mushroom I know of that can endure dry conditions by just drying out, and then days or weeks or maybe even months later when it rains again rehydrating and then continuing to grow.

But I don’t think that in this context drying out means *fully* drying out. I have seen Psilocybe subaeruginosa last a few weeks and it tends to be when the conditions are mild in every way. Just enough rain *or dew* regularly, but not heavy, temperatures that are cool but not freezing, and little wind and either overcast days or shade.

So I’m guessing there has been reliable dew at night and not much in the way of sunny but windy days, that or a most excellent microclimate.

This year, I watched psilocybe cyanescens dry out, re-hydrate and grow bigger 3-4 times during the growth cycle of a flush. I used to falsely think, once they go hygrophanous, they stop growing, but if conditions are right they can keep growing for quite an extended time.

That's cool. Checked the weather there and it's way cooler than I thought, probably more humid as well.
"Hygrophanous" is a term used to describe the colour change in certain mushroom species according to it's water content, BTW.
Keep posting more photos of these beauties!

I saw the same here, weather was up and down a lot. Some patches froze and melted, some froze and kept growing. I had one subaeruginosa fruit that I left in a patch that got very dry, totally froze through a couple days without thawing, thawed out, rehydrated and continued growing. It must have been out for over two months after the cap flatened out. I looked at it the other day and it was still standing strong.
