P. Subaeruginosa hunting and identification
    #28612612 - 01/07/24 05:38 AM (21 days, 4 hours ago)

Hello all, I’m quite new to this and I was looking to get some help, my main two questions are these;

Would I be at all likely to find this species (or any other psilocybe species for that matter) at this time of year, I’m in SW vic Aus so it isn’t super hot or cold rn but it has been quite wet.

I’m aware of a few locations near me where they grow somewhat commonly but I don’t know if I want to make the trip if there’s no chance of finding anything

My other question is about potential look alikes, for psilocybe subaeruginosa is there any look alikes that bruise blue like they do? I’m mainly worried about galerinas or other similar species

Other than that any tips for safety or convenience like times to go or things to watch out for would be very helpful tyvm for any help you can offer

You are extremely unlikely to find Psilocybe subaeruginosa at this time of year. Late autumn and early winter are usually the best times, with some being found in early autumn to early spring. Outside of this finds are very very rare.

What counts as a lookalike is different for everyone, but in general I would say that the only blue bruising lookalikes for Psilocybe subaeruginosa in Australia are other Psilocybe species.

However there are numerous mushrooms that don’t bruise blue but nonetheless every year I see many people who have found them and believe that they are bruising blue. Some bruise black, some have blue colouration etc. I have occasionally seen people thinking the purplish stems Galerina marginata/patagonica sometimes have is blue bruising.

At this time of year in Victoria it isn’t the best time to be hunting. If you get enough rain there are some active mushrooms around but they are one or more of the following; rare, weak, small and found in small numbers.

Possibilities include Panaeolus cinctulus, some of the active Gymnopilus, Psilocybe ‘tasmaniana’ and maybe Psilocybe alutacea.

If you like looking for mushrooms then maybe go have a look. But if you want to find magic mushooms in useful quantities wait at least until April, or when you see people posting finds from your area.

Thank you for your help!
I have seen/had some p. Subaeruginosa before so I’m somewhat confident I can tell the bruising colour but I’ll certainly get them identified by someone more knowledgeable before I put them anywhere near my mouth

As for hunting I guess I’ll leave that until April/may unless I end up in the area for whatever reason before then, fingers crossed I find something whenever I end up going

I have a subaeruginosa guide, this should help you with the basics on finding them. Your very unlikely to see them until April/May.

EDIT: I included a lot of pics in my guide, because the more subs you see the better you are prepared to identify them. You can also check my gallery for lots of pics... theres a little computer icon under my name you can click on to go to the gallery.
