ID Request - Gymn sp.?

Found this on a hike today. Looks to me like a possible gymnopilus variety. It was growing out of the base of an oak tree in the east bay hills.
I haven't made a spore print yet but will try to update later.
Gymns aren't something I have found yet, so I am not too confident in my identification.
Thanks in advance!

There's no such species anymore, at least not in the US, the synonymous G. junonius doesn't occur in North America at all.
If this was found in California, given the user's nick, I would suggest G. ventricosus. However I'd let people more competent on California species give a better qualified opinion.
All in all not an active species.

What's the active junonius called there now? And is it the same as the one in East-Asia?

There are apparently several active species in the group formerly known in the US as G. junonius. The active species are mostly eastern in distribution if I remember correctly, hence the previous mistaken notion that the same species was active in the east but inactive in the west.
I can't remember whether the Asian species is the same, but you can check this thread from a few years back where Alan cites a paper written on the subject.

Interesting. I knew spectabilis was renamed junonius but I thought the spectabilis name came back to use for the active ones. Might've confused it with subspectabilis. The ones from the far east is now two species, one called orientispectabilis and the other is a "sister species" to g.luteus with no scientific name. Thanks for the update!

Fascinating stuff! And yes, I'm in California. We've had a bit of rain off and on over the last few weeks so we've been enjoying the different fungi popping up.
These look to be a bit older and are completely infested with bugs. I knew some species were active but beyond that, I have very little knowledge about gyms.
I'll be watching out for more when I walk these hills again.

What do you mean it has no scientific name?

It's new to science. Not named yet.

I sort of wonder if I should look for the active gyms during winter warmups. It looks like luteofolius is the off season fruiter

I see more luteofolius in winter than other months in the bay area
