What makes a Libertarian?
    #2861163 - 07/06/04 12:22 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Well? What does it take to be considered a Libertarian? The differences from person to person will ofcourse differ ie: Alex123's thread of what "Europeans" consider to be Libertarian (which may I add is not what I would consider to be a Libertarian). Then again i've seen websites that show liberals and libertarians in the same light, which i disagree with. Well what is it?

Dictionary definition:

lib?er?tar?i?an ( P ) Pronunciation Key (lbr-t?r-n) n.
One who advocates maximizing individual rights and minimizing the role of the state.
One who believes in free will.

libertarian

\Lib`er*ta"ri*an\ (-t[=a]"r[i^]*an), a. [See Liberty.] Pertaining to liberty, or to the doctrine of free will, as opposed to the doctrine of necessity.

libertarian
\Lib`er*ta"ri*an\, n. One who holds to the doctrine of free will.

I've said from day one that anything that violates my individual rights I'm against. I've also made it clear that i don't like the government interfering into my life. There are a few on this site that don't blink twice about telling those that have earned their money (or whatever) legally that they should be taxed more or give it to those with less while claiming to have a Libertarian philosophical base.

what is a Libertarian then?

One who feels that HE is more qualified to make the decisions regarding his life than a group of 'officials.' I would also add that recognition of individual rights, that is the right to do what you want so long as you do not initiate force or fraud against another, is paramount in being a libertarian(as it's more popularly used in the United States today).

does that feeling that HE is more qualified to make the decisions regarding his life than a group of 'officials' stretch to the economic realm? (devils advocate)

Absolutely, individual rights don't become null and void where economics is concerned.

Then many here are fibbers. Or living a lie. Perhaps many are claiming to be what they aren't because they know that Libertarian philosophy is logical and people can relate to their beliefs. With Libertarians you can pretty much guess what they are going to be on a stance because there are some basic philosophical "rules" if you will, in order to be one. I've often noticed that with Liberals this "base" shifts with the wind and changes into another form from topic to topic. The same can be said for Conservatives (republicans in particular), just the change is slower. Thier "rules" are liquid.

I guess you could break them down into 4 different philisophical categories but then you'd have the same argument of classifying people right or left. I did a quick search on the 4 different political beliefs and there were different kinds of classification depending on country.
