Intelligence: nature or nurture?
    #28610858 - 01/05/24 06:06 PM (22 days, 2 hours ago)

This is a long-standing debate in the scientific community.  What's responsible for one's intelligence, is it his genes or his environment?

Personally, I think both are needed, although genes have a slight edge.  The way I see it, if it were possible to cultivate intelligence through education (one instance of environment), we would be seeing a lot of geniuses now for the effort that we put in, but we don't.  I think this is because intelligence/genius mostly requires genes that confer great intellectual powers.

If you are born with "intelligence genes", and you don't work hard, you won't become a genius.  However if you don't have the genes for it, but you work very hard, you still won't become a genius.

What you think?

I think you're right . I have 2 children and one of them despite all of our extra effort is kinda like Kelly from Married with Children .  The other one is clearly going to be a rocket scientist or some kinda genius . No tutors  or extra bullshit for this one . Her memory is  simply unbelievable and shes also highly manipulative , super intense and charismatic .

Intelligence/genius depends on what your definition of it is.  Lots of potential that may not be recognized except when the right situation presents its self.  How much is luck involved in your evaluation?

Is it genius if you can pick what day of the week it would be though out history, with out having to think about it, if somebody gave you a date.  Or to know what the weather was on every date since you were three.  Maybe all this while you can not function with out full time care?

I could think of lots of questions that might keep this subject a bit muddy.  I do believe genes make impact on lots of stuff but find the meaning of it harder to define.

That's not true intelligence. It's just having an exceptional memory.

Then what is true intelligence? What is genius?

I think most people consider intelligence to be related to working memory.

I fall on the side of primarily nurture. We just have a very limited view of "genius". Which makes sense, really. If it's not profitable...it ain't worth shit.
