HW pellets or Straw Pellets? for Blue Oysters
    #28589607 - 12/19/23 10:35 AM (1 month, 9 days ago)

Hello,

I am going to attempt to grow blue oysters - I have recent experience with cubes but now that I have a lifetime supply its time to move on.

Which substrate do you recommend straw pellets or hardwood?
I do not yet have a laminar flood hood, just a 55qt SAB-

The pics are the blue oyster mycelium I have grown out.

Thank for any input!

Straw! This bag here I used cold tap water to hydrate. It would be a bit better if you used hot water to hydrate as it's so much faster and is another layer of pasteurisation, but it works really well.

Have never bothered with hardwood pellets as straw is cheaper, and the BE has been well over 100% with no supplementation.

Hi I am checking in about your Straw pellet method- This seems the easiest as this will be my first Gourmet Grow-- I also have a lot of Coir from growing magic mushrooms that I am going to use separately.

Couple questions about Straw if you could help
1) What is the spawn to substrate ratio you use?
I am growing Blue oyster mycelium on Oats in quart jars
1 jar per bag of substrate?

2) Do you have a straw pellet recipe you could share?
For 4-5 5LB bags.
How many cups or grams of pellets to approx how much water?

Hi!

I thought I'd share my 2 cents as I've grown small scale commercially on just straw pellets for two years now. It's very easy way to start but the yield is smaller than with supplemented and sterilized subs. Not sure about hardwood but straw pellets can be done in cold water (though hot water is better for hydrating the pellets) and it's very failsafe - I have never got mold, not even one bag during the 2 years.

- 5% spawn ratio is ok (good quality spawn goes a loooong way)
- Aim for 60% moisture content (may vary depending on the brand of pellets)
- Add a little chalk to lower the pH more suitable for mycelium and less suitable for molds
- Some brands of straw pellets are superior, others may contain fungisides or some shit and not work. Even if some brand works, another might give you quicker colonization or bigger yield. There are remarkable differences. Once you find the best brand in your area you'll be golden.

In my area straw pellets are over $1 a pound. HWFP are less than half that. Where do you find inexpensive straw pellets?

I am going to run a couple bags of each with king trumpet oysters to see if the yield offsets the higher substrate price.

I've had great luck with spent coffee grounds myself. Cheap and easy to source

Well thats quite expensive (I pay about a fourth of that). There's no way the yield offsets that. I'm not so sure that you'll even get any more yield with straw pellets than with hwfp.
In Europe straw pellets are cheap and in my area (up north) there are no hwfp even available, only coniferous tree pellets. Dunno how things are in US, but I think it's basically the opposite.

How do you prep them?  How is the yield?
The nearby starschmucks gives away coffee grounds. I  drive past 2 of their stores twice a day.

Because of the porous woody nature of the grounds, I PC them in a spawn bag at 15psi for an hour. That being said, I had decent yeilds. About 3 flushes big enough to cook with and still gift some to others. You can supplement the coffee grounds and play with the mix. I even had blue oysters growing out of my kitchen compost bin because they were growing so strong xD
