This is very inspiring man! I can't wait to grow them too. Amazing zaps. Cheers!

Anyone ever see their zap cultures do this? They look fantastic and clear, once transfer, BOOM, yellow 🤦♂️ some kind of bacteria? I’m just tossing these ones but I have others that I may have to take to brf puck. Thoughts?

Is it bacteria or metabolites?

I’m thinking a bacteria. It’s definitely not one I’ve ever seen before though. I’m not sure if it’s not unusual for zaps to create metabolites so early on agar. I would think if it is, it would be because of bacteria

IMO everything is an experiment until more people get experience growing these. If it were a stone producer, I'd expect way more metabolites. So why not send it to grain? Document which one it was.

I wouldn't discard that just yet, most cultures from species in Section Zapotecorum produce some tan to yellowish pigments, bacteria is usually visible as a slimy liquid like growth, if the mycelium is growing normally and not with a lot of irregularities I would transfer some more and maybe to a different agar recipe to see what it does.

Fuck it, I’ll send it and see what happens!
Inski, I’ve been transferring these things and it just seems to be the case with them. I was going to take it to brf but I already have a lot of other ones going. I think I’ll just take it to grain and see what happens 🤷♂️ losing grain is no stranger to me 😂

Yes, go to some small jars of grain, it will be obvious if it is bacteria and you can just get rid of it then.

Just put 4 more selections of zap talpa to grain. I have some other jars that are nearing spawning, but gotta keep the hunt going.

Tripped over more old pics while chatting with my Zapo Tapalpa source the other day. I had almost forgotten grow bags lol. This would be the Sawmill Zapo probably around 2010-2011 I think. Would have been doing a lot of edibles back then and that would explain the bag.

Is anyone else working with the Tapalpa? Not to be confused with Tapla lol. I have that on the back burner right now so I don't confuse the two. Anyways, I'm told the Tapalpa should be extremely rare now as it is an older variety and few spores were released. Geographically the Tapalpa was found a ways east of the Sawmill so I'm hoping they are closely related if not the same. It is macroscopically verified as Zapotecorum and not Sub-Zapotecorum which also frequents the area. Anyways, it's been eating at me as I watch the first test sub casing begin to lightly colonize. Seeing the old pics again isn't helping.
On other fronts, the undescribed section Zapotecorum India went to LC the other day and Valdivia is just a few weeks away from spawning. If that. Both will go to straw based subs. No f'n around with tests for these. Taking too long as is lol.
Shit's just crazy around here.

That is really cool elpico, are your plates exposed to some light or did that pin form in the dark?

This plate was in cold storage for over a year, but has been sitting in the light at room temperature for a few weeks. Nice to see you active on the forums again!

Very interesting, I'm hopefully receiving some genetics from this species soon so I can join in.
No doubt you'll take that pin for a clone 👍 Thanks so much, I was pursuing other hobbies for a while but I'm so happy that all of my cultures are reviving well, it's really exciting.
