Services which request tips - 2024 plan 1

I was going over our finances last year and realized that we spent a significant of money just tipping for services. This included services where I placed an order to pick something up and still tipped even though really I was the one doing the legwork. Or tipping for someone performing a service that 5 years ago you wouldnt have tipped for (picking up a packaged container and buying it at the checkstand, ordering fast food, etc..)
I am not necessarily anti-tipping, but do realize that to cost of tipping has increased significantly by relation to the cost of service provided, including dinners out. Also the opportunity to tip has increased significantly. This is due to changes on receipts which allow a tip section, or electronic screen payment technology that by default asks the payor to include a 15% + tip. Then there are the services which automatically calculate and charge for a tip - we had an incidence where we placed a pick up order for pizza, and didnt realize until I got home with the pizza that they had automatically charged me a $7 tip (on a $40 order). All of this, at least I have noticed, has squeezed additional money out of our accounts, and that is in addition to inflationary costs over the past two years, which have not been offset by wage increases for our family.
So my goal this year is to keep track of all those situations where I do tip, to get an understanding of the true dollar amount I spend on tips. Ill just have a google docs spreadsheet and throw the number in there whenever it happens. I think part two of this is rather than have to decide to tip something, or tip $0 to when that 'Would you like to tip' option comes up, I am just going to avoid going to those places, and opt to eat at places without that instead.
Any thoughts on this stuff?

Last year I got an emissions test for my car and got the tip flip. That made me reflect pretty hard on how often I was unconsciously hitting the tip X% buttons even for quick service type stuff.
I just avoid food delivery entirely. If I'm in line getting food somewhere I might tip $1. At a sit-down restaurant I'll tip between $5-$10, but am not concerned with whatever percentage of anything. If I'm getting drinks at a bar, which I rarely do anymore, I'll tip $1 per drink or so. Haircut I'll tip $7-12 though.

Thanks for posting this. It’s something I’ve been thinking about lately, as well. I like the idea of boycotting, but I also feel like it’s going to get more and more difficult to avoid those businesses. For example, the local pet store in my area now solicits tips when using digital payment. And it’s really the only place available to get what I need without going through a lot of time and trouble. I can just pay cash instead, which I try to do, but a lot of businesses are also trying to get away from cash transactions. Most the Home Depots in my city, for example, have limited self check out to cards only, so you have to go to the contractor side to pay cash. Our baseball stadium went completely cashless a couple years ago. No vendors can accept cash. This is also a trend at concert venues, such as Red Rocks. Now you got me wanting to keep track of tips this year.

Tipping is a scam. Everyone should be paid a living wage.

Yeah, that emissions test is just bonkers.
As for tipping, this is basically what I do. But nowadays, I try to just avoid places that ask for tips cause I am just that broke at the moment. The whole tipping culture is just getting out of hand....

I used to tip barbers but haircuts are way too expensive these days. I'd rather just buzz my head myself.

This is what I’ve been saying every time somebody pushes back against it. I am paying for the sandwich. The restaurant should be paying the person bringing me the sandwich. I should not be in charge of paying the person who brought me the sandwich inside of the restaurant that is supposedly paying them.

You should give it a try - tracking stuff like this is not too difficult with immediate access to google docs, and when used right data can be so eye opening . I actually keep a running spreadsheet of our expenses broken down each year from multiple categories, which really only took time to set up, and looking back from now to 2014 when I started is incredible. Doing so has helped us compartmentalize expenses and ensure extra money is always available when we need it.. let me know if you would like an ill find a way to share it with you.

You're not wrong to be angry. And it's always like at pet shops or somewhere that they can tug a bit more at your hearts strings, stating that its going to a good cause - but I know if I were able to get a good look at the breakdown of expenses and whos getting paid there is someone making $$ off that, and its probably a corporation. Id rather donate my money to stuff I trust - like the trees.org thing Geo/Asante recently posted.
I am an auto no on those.

Agreed with this. I have much less of a problem if there was just no tipping, but food costs more. They just bake whatever living wage service workers need into the service itself. That would be such a better working model than the social pressure model we seem to currently operate at where people are given an electronic button 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%????? Or in a box below TIP NOTHING. And someone on the other side of the screen watching them.
I just feel like a greater portion of society than not are likely not savings savvy, might already have some level of credit card debt with interest, and are more likely to be living paycheck to paycheck. These are the last group of people who should be tipping for services they dont need to, and they are probably the most likely to, and most likely to hit that 20% or higher button, turning their $4 coffee turn into a $6.60, putting themselves further into debt for an experience that was not nearly matching in worth to the cost.
Im keeping that money in my pockets. Ill tip if we eat out at a restaurant with a server who brings food to our table, fills our drinks and brings us the check. But am just avoiding places that have those electronic screens. And unless I am blown away by the service, am hitting no tip if I unexpectedly encounter one moving forward - Especially if I am asked to tip before I even receive the service.

Ive been bald and shaving my head for 18 or so years now. I have spent maybe $200 on buzzers for my head in that span of time. If you want to save money, thats one easy place to start
