Ipomoea cardiophylla
    #28609231 - 01/04/24 07:45 AM (4 months, 11 days ago)

A close relative of Ipomoea tricolor.

Growing indoors under artificial lighting.
The flower is smaller than I. tricolor and the fruit point down, not up.

Here is an image from a taxonomic paper on Ipomoea section Tricolores showing the very close relationship of the group.
All 3 of these species are active.

The interesting thing is that it almost appears as if Ipomoea tricolor arose as a hybrid between Ipomoea marginisepala and Ipomoea cardiophylla that was selected over time for larger flowers.

Furthermore I am not aware of a single wild or natural population of Ipomoea tricolor that has been identified, it appears feral in many areas but no point of origination is known that I am aware of.

I'll probably post some more about this if I decide to do a topic about the evolution and biology of traditional sacred Ipomoea species.

Please, do. The fungi part is interesting. Plant do not really need it. Cannot be put back if removed with a fungicide. Doesn't grow through a graft. Most likely very much host specific. Probably is from the mother part, but who knows...

Ok.

I'll get around to covering the basics of Periglandula biology in relation to Ipomoea and their alkaloids, it may be awhile but I'll try to start on it today nonetheless.
