I was exposed in and involved with the red hat lineage for a while in my late teens

The ceremonies can be very nice, and I do like hearing the droning chants, but I am disinclined to formal religion of all kinds. The lineage certificates formalize the whole thing, and I guess that is important for people in the wider world.

My interest is more what we do in our own home, and out in the world.

yes me too good point peace sweet
it is also where we spend by far the most of the time so yes

I think it is valuable to have lineage which can preserve the teachings, but also books are extremely important.

In this area that would be any book that teaches samatha (and vipassana) and then doing the hoops on your own driveway.

there are 7 pages of it on Amazon (https://www.amazon.ca/s?k=vipassana&dc&crid=34AOMJ0MKKXDT&qid=1704311925&sprefix=samatha+vipassana%2Caps%2C125&ref=aw_s_fkmr0)

cool almost all of them seem extremely good

and you could pick any one of them and from that learn to access your own path.

however, reading several books can give a more balanced perspective on the one thing that is most important which is samatha.

normally we are conspicuous consumers, e.g. my wife has 8 boxes of fashion books which she never looks at,
this type of thing creates unnecessary load.

Sometimes you have asked how to find your center, I have evaded the question. I would say that your center is samatha.
it is not geometric, but it can become central to all things in mind.

i haen't found books to be that useful

long mediation retreats have been very useful.  teachers have helped me with pitfalls, said things that helped open things up at just the right time, encouraged me to look at places that seemed boring or unfruitful that were very fruitful.

what really got me was how life was different after a retreat. Its one thing to read about something like emptiness of self, its quite another to see it function in your own life.

The insight meditation tradition, mahayana and vajrayana have different styles of teaching and practice, and there is diversity within that as well. I think they developed and evolved to meet different kinds of people, individually and culturally.

oh and i can see the utility of certification. I have certifications in a specialized area I work in, and that lets everybody know I've been trained, passed the tests and theoretically have the knowledge and skill that meets certain standards. This isn't the only criteria I'm evaluated by when hired for a job.

It also can be abused.

oof right kind of feels bad

well is always relative, in many ways my life is not stable and a mess, I wouldn't represent myself as a teacher even if someone I respected gave me a certificate lol

I would like to learn to communicate more kindly. I tend to just see ideas in our writings and forget there are people behind them. In person its much easier for me to communicate with kindness

I want to see your eyes, and how your face moves when you speak or listen

I'm legally blind without my glasses, I once lost them for a while and it was so much harder to understand people without being able to see the details of the face

when I talk about the way, I mean how the hot soup is swirling down my gullet, one minute, and negotiating for more or less heat at the thermostat. the only thing that translates across for everyone is attentiveness, and calmness.
