2 bags in the colonizing closet, I thought it looked like it was pinning so I took it out to put it into fruiting tent, and cut the top open and took the photos. looks weird to me did i make a mistake? Top two pictures are golden oysters, last is king oyster. The substrate is CVG
These have been colonizing since 12/16 and didn't seem really colonized yet but as I said I thought it was pins......
edit: look further down the thread to see pix of it getting more weird LOL

Sometimes, the mycelium of my cubes look like the first picture. This happens when there is not enough fresh air and lots of humidity.

Well this gets curiouser. 4 days later and some mushrooms are growing. These seem to be golden mushrooms growing on a huge stem of some sort. I had 2 bags in the tent, one labeled King oyster one Golden oyster. But both bags are growing these weird things. Could I have mislabeled my spawn jars, or put one of each spawn jar into the coir and this is some sort of mutant of king/golden? I'mma let em go, presumably these will be tasty regardless LOL

Typically oysters grow and are grown on supplemented hardwood pellets. Not CVG which is better suited for actives like cubes.
To grow long stems like kings open the tops of the bags and letting the mushrooms try to grow tall to overcome the lack of oxygen. If you want caps like for goldens and other oysters just make a slit in the bag instead of opening a large area. They are growing the stem to get more fresh air and less co2, they're stifled.

I agree with Son that slits are preferable but you should still be able to pull nice fruits from an open bag like that. One thing to watch out for is open bags can lose more moisture and have lower yields as a result.
Those micro oysters make me think you still need more fresh air.

well you guys were right, the C02 had me. "Somebody" turned down the exhaust fan speed LOL.
I turned it up and look!

As to the open top on the one bag, I guess I mislabeled that bag as King oyster, and as sonofahooker said, open top is good for that. Once I realized golden oyster was growing in there, I taped it all up and cut a few slits. Nothing happened yet but I'm hopeful.
As to using the CVG for oysters, I have had a little good luck by adding some pasteurized hard wood chips, so it's "CVGW" however I do intend to experiment with just hardwood in the future. (Or at least a higher % of wood in there)
Thanks so much, it's great to get good responses

For a moment, I did belieive you accidentally crossed kings & yellows like the Black Pearl King Oyster. I have heard it is possible but not sure if you can do it at home. There might be snake venom involved in the process!
Glad you solved the issue!
