Heya! I was recommended to introduce myself to the community after signing up via an automated message.

I'm an undergraduate student working towards my Bachelors in Mathematics. Hoping slave away at grad school and feed into the academia pyramid scheme. :crazy2:

Anyway... Love these "old-style" boards php boards, they load so fast! Is there any community slang or culture I should get know while adjusting?

Thanks!

By the way, do people prefer you to quote a post when replying? I know some message boards and mailing lists have rules on whether to put quotes at the bottom, at top, or to avoid it all together

I noticed this message board has a feature to see the post you reply to if you hover over what I am replying to.

If you're responding directly to what someone said, you want to reply to quote.

There's no hard and fast rules about quoting. I think it's really a stylistic choice. Quotes help indicate what you're talking about, but two people just going back and forth until the quote string is super long gets cumbersome. Totally still happens, though. Most people just hit that "quote" button over the person's post, bang out their response, and hit "submit." It's fun that we can type out and modify the code to our heart's delight, though.

Can't think of any slang, and technical terms would be far too numerous to get into. The GIFs are fun, though. If you just quote anything you see, then it'll show you what to type (or cut and paste) to get that particular GIF.

Aha! And there lies the secret to the nested quote quoting a quote of a quote ... ad nauseam!

While browsing through the Cultivation sub-forum I did see a lot of slang, but most of that was picked up easily after reading some "intro to ... guide" and "best ... tek" posts.

Welcome pointauthority!

You remind me of when i first joined-, one of my first threads was, is it better to start a new thread on an old topic or bump an old thread? People found that funny.

Honestly, it's a trial by fire. But advice?
Give up on wanting to be liked,  your people will find you.

Read more than post in beginning, use the search box (another acronym someone might yell at you)

And when the arsemaggots find you, take it on the chin.
Hope you like your stay!

I personally try to just clean it up a bit so that people can read the relevant part of what I'm quoting, but don't have to look at the rest of it. Like I did here.

I had a math tutor. And was pleasantly surprised when I got it down and it became fun.
I celebrated when I no longer needed math.
Had I of been able to learn math easier, it not of been such a struggle, I would of gotten a different degree.
I STRUGGLED.
I think I have a learning disability with math. I have no issues in any other area, except math.

I've heard of Axler's book. The newest release is indeed free as a PDF, and now includes determinants and topics about multialgebras better now, if I recall?

Math is much different than other subjects! Its concrete in the sense that is fundamental, it is ancient. How many thousand of years ago were other fields such as Philosophy the same field as Mathematics?

I personally think learning math changes your brain and the way you perceive the world. Not just to think "mathematically", but is a viable way to learn how to think critically and process information in a way to learn more. Many derive great pleasure from learning math.

There is much to learn about and you'll never grasp all of it in your life time, so pick the flavors that suit you most. I think you would benefit greatly from studying An Introduction to Abstract Mathematics by Neil Donaldson & Alessandra Pantano, which has a freely available PDF.

If you take anything from this, take that the only way to learn math is to struggle. You will get angry, upset, and feel defeat; but its a very rewarding journey.

I'm not totally sure. But he definitely takes the approach of putting off determinants which makes the topic a bit more interesting. Determinants are too powerful and can distract from the beauty, at least I think thats what he was going for.

Let me know if you need any book suggestions or want to chat math. I love it and self study it. I'm also a grade school math teacher, so I'm still pretty sharp with basic algebra calculations.
