  • 1942:  Country Joe McDonald is born

Quote:

Country Joe McDonald (born Joseph Allen McDonald; January 1, 1942) was the lead singer of the 1960s psychedelic rock group Country Joe & the Fish.

Personal life

McDonald was born in Washington, D.C., At the age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Navy. After his enlistment, he attended the Los Angeles City College for a year. In the early 1960s, he began busking on Berkeley, California's famous Telegraph Avenue. His father, Worden McDonald, was of Scottish Presbyterian heritage, and his mother, the late Florence Plotnick, was the daughter of Russian Jewish immigrants, and served for many years on the Berkeley city council. Both of his parents were active in leftist politics and named their son in honor of Soviet Communist leader Joseph Stalin. As of 2009, Country Joe still lives in Berkeley, California. McDonald's daughter, Seven, is a columnist for the LA Weekly. He has four other children, Devin, Tara, Ryan, and Emily.

Career

McDonald has recorded 33 albums and has written hundreds of songs over a career spanning 40 years. He and Barry Melton co-founded Country Joe & the Fish which became a pioneer psychedelic rock band with their eclectic performances at The Avalon Ballroom, The Fillmore, Monterey Pop Festival and both the original and the reunion Woodstock Festivals.

Their best known song is his "The "Fish" Cheer/I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die Rag," a black comedy novelty song about the Vietnam War, whose familiar chorus ("One, two, three, what are we fighting for?") is well known to the Woodstock generation and Vietnam Veterans of the 1960s and 1970s. The "Fish Cheer" was the band performing a call-and-response with the audience, spelling the word "fish", followed by Country Joe yelling, "What's that spell?" twice, with the audience responding, and then, the third time, "What's that smell?", followed immediately by the song. The "Fish Cheer" evolved into the "Fuck Cheer" after the Berkeley free speech movement.

The cheer was on the original recording of the I-Feel-Like-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die Rag, being played right before the song on the LP of the same name. The cheer became popular and the crowd would spell out F-I-S-H when the band performed live. During the summer of 1968 the band played on the Schaefer Music Festival tour. Gary "Chicken" Hirsh suggested before one of the shows to spell the word "fuck" instead of "fish." Although the crowd loved it, the management of the Schaefer Beer Festival did not and kicked the band off the tour for life. The Ed Sullivan Show then canceled a previously scheduled appearance by the band, telling them to keep the money they had already been paid in exchange for never playing on the show. The modified cheer continued at most of the band's live shows throughout the years, including Woodstock and the Isle of Wight Festival. In Massachusetts, McDonald was fined $500 for uttering "fuck" in public.

In 2003 McDonald was sued for copyright infringement over his signature song, specifically the "One, two, three, what are we fighting for?" chorus part, as derived from the 1926 early jazz classic "Muskrat Ramble", co-written by Kid Ory. The suit was brought by Ory's daughter Babette, who held the copyright at the time. Since decades had already passed from the time McDonald composed his song in 1965, Ory based her suit on a new version of it recorded by McDonald in 1999. The court however upheld McDonald's laches defense, noting that Ory and her father were aware of the original version of the song, with the same questionable section, for some three decades without bringing a suit. In 2006, Ory was ordered to pay McDonald $750,000 for attorney fees and had to sell her copyrights to do so.

In 2004, Country Joe regrouped with some of the original members of Country Joe and The Fish as the Country Joe Band – Bruce Barthol, David Bennett Cohen, and Gary "Chicken" Hirsh. The band toured the United States and the United Kingdom. In the spring of 2005, McDonald joined a larger protest against California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposed budget cuts at the California State Capitol Building.

In the fall of 2005, political commentator Bill O'Reilly compared McDonald to Cuban President Fidel Castro, remarking on McDonald's involvement in Cindy Sheehan's protests against the Iraq War.

  • 1967:  The Doors release the single for "Break On Through (To The Other Side)"

Quote:

"Break on Through (To the Other Side)" is a song by The Doors from their debut album, The Doors. It was the first single released by the band and was unsuccessful compared to later hits, reaching only #126 in the United States. Despite this, it remains one of the band's signature and most popular songs and became a concert staple.

Twenty-four years after its original US release, "Break on Through" became a minor hit in the UK, peaking at #64 in the singles chart.

Overview

The song also appears as track one on the band's debut album. Elektra Records' censors objected to the drug use implied by the line "she gets high", which is repeated in the middle section of the song (after the line "everybody loves my baby"). The original album version and all reissues until the 1990s have the word "high" deleted, with Morrison singing "she gets" four times before a final wail. Live versions and more recent, remastered releases have the full line portion restored.

Musical Structure and Composition

The song is in 4/4 time and quite fast paced, the tune being similar to that of blues guitarist Elmore James' "Stranger Blues".

The piece begins with a jazz-flavored drum groove similar the opening phrases played by Billy Higgins on Dexter Gordon's "Soy Califa," in which a clave pattern is played as a rim click underneath a driving ride cymbal pattern. John Densmore appreciated the new (at the time) Bossa Nova craze coming from Brazil. So he decided to use it in the song.

It is then joined in by a disjointed quirky solo on the organ quite similar to introduction of Ray Charles' "What'd I Say", which has a few intentional misplaced notes in it, while the bass-line, similar to a typical bass line used in bossa nova, continues almost unhindered all of the way through the song.

Robby's guitar riff initially came from the Paul Butterfield song Shake Your Moneymaker.  He changed around some of the notes, as well as the beat and came up with the guitar for the song.

Other covers

Stone Temple Pilots covered the song for The Doors tribute album Stoned Immaculate. Mexican hard rock band La Cuca has done a cover as a hidden track in their album La Racha.

When the Doors were featured on an episode of VH1 Storytellers, various guest singers filled in for Jim Morrison. Stone Temple Pilots lead singer Scott Weiland filled in and sang "Break on Through", along with the song he said inspired him to rock, "Five to One".

Serbian rock band Night Shift covered the song in 2002 on their debut album Undercovers.

Appearances in media

    * In the Oliver Stone film, The Doors, the song is performed three times; first in Ray Manzarek's home, then it's performed live during the band's early days at the London Fog, and later in the film at the infamous Miami concert, immediately after Jim exposes himself to the audience and is parading through the crowd to evade the police. The third and final performance is paired with "Dead Cats, Dead Rats", which was often coupled with the song when the band performed it live.
    * The song is heard in the film Forrest Gump (along with "Hello, I Love You" and "People Are Strange") as Forrest takes up ping pong during his tour in Vietnam.
    * Appears in the video game Tony Hawk's Underground 2.
    * Featured in the trailer for the 2008 film 21.
    * A remixed version of the song is featured in the video game Burnout Revenge. It was remixed by BT and it is 7:08 long.
    * Featured in the film Jarhead (2005).
    * Featured on The Simpsons during a 4th Season episode when Krusty sings during a flashback to 1973.
    * The song is used in the music/rhythm game Rock Band 3, with the song being featured in the opening cinematic.

  • 1967:  Educational film LSD-25 is released

LSD-25 (1967)

25min | Short, Documentary | 1 January 1967 (USA)

Summaries

The dangers of LSD are driven home to teenagers in this classroom training film, which is "narrated" by an LSD tab. The "tab" tells kids that he is "a depth charge in the mind!" and various teenagers are shwn babbling about their LSD experiences. "Experts" are presented who warn that LSD makes kids "paint themselves green" and has various other horrible side effects, the most serious of which is that it gives users a police record, and that there is "no known way of getting your fingerprints out of a police file once they're in there."

  • 1968:  LSD becomes illegal in Illinois

Quote:

Today's law

Q. IS THERE A state law against using LSD? I've heard that you commit a crime only if you sell it or give it away?

A. IT IS A criminal offense to even possess LSD and has been since Jan. 1, 1968. The 1967 legislature amended the Drug Abuse Control Act to cover LSD and other depressant, stimulant and hallucinogenic drugs. The only persons or businesses who can legally possess any of these drugs are manufacturers, wholesale and retail druggists and persons engaged in scientific testing of such drugs. A person who is not employed in any of these categories can possess such a drug only if he has a prescription for the drug which has been given to him by a licensed doctor or dentist. PENALTY FOR illegally possessing LSD for a first offense is a fine of $100 to $1,000 or imprisonment up to one year or both. For a second offense the fine can be as high as $2,500 and imprisonment as long as five years. Penalties are even stiffer for the person of age 18 or older who induces a person under 18 to use the drug.

  • 2006:  Ketamine becomes illegal in England

Quote:

The incidence of recreational ketamine use increased through the end of the century, especially in the context of raves and other parties. The increase in illicit use prompted ketamine's placement in Schedule III of the United States Controlled Substance Act in August 1999.  In the United Kingdom, it became outlawed and labeled a Class C drug on 1 January 2006.

I have one album of theirs, interesting stuff. May have to listen to some in honor.

Don't worry about me, I've got all that I need. And I'm singing my song to the sky

You know how it feels, With the breeze of the sun in your eyes. Not minding that time's passing by

I've got all and more, My smile, just as before. Is all that I carry with me

I talk to myself, I need nobody else. I'm lost and I'm mine, yes I'm free

55th anniversary of The Doors first single "Break On Through (To The Other Side)" today. Also, it's the 55th anniversary of the educational scare film LSD-25. Here's the film in full, followed by Jonathan King's anti-LSD song "Round Round", which was featured in LSD-25.
