Cactus study * 1
    #28604384 - 12/31/23 09:40 AM (28 days, 7 hours ago)

I am working with three people right now, one of them works in the lab, currently he takes genetic samples from plants and studies them, looking for markers which could pertain to disease, pest resistance, growth vigor, production of enzymes among other things. Another member of the crew has a strong drive for perfection, and is extremely scientific minded, having ran numerous extractions of various plants (mainly mimosa, acacia, and various cacti). The third person also has the same interest in extraction, but focuses more on growing cacti, and maintaining extremely good care of the soil and plants he works with. He has not had as much experience extracting, but has done extremely well with mimosa and various trichocereus species.

The fourth member of this group is me. I have done several extractions of various plants, but have never had the space to set up a proper lab, so I'm really excited to have my friends on board so I can focus on other aspects of the project. I have a love of plants and the alkaloids they produce, and a knowledge of some obscure plants and other lesser known interesting cacti that might not produce any mescaline, but are still worth looking into. At one point I had an extremely large and well documented cactus collection, then my power went out one day and the majority of my plants ended up dying.

Because of my loss, and my interest in alkaloids and the pursuit of knowledge, I decided to do something positive. I now have 86 samples for genetic testing and 100 samples for alkaloid testing which are currently being stored in a liquid nitrogen freezer at the genetics lab where my friend works.

At this time we are trying to find some funding (through the academic community) to begin tests, which hopefully will commence this summer. The alkaloid tests will begin as soon as I can find an appropriate spot with room and get the right supplies.

We should be able to make a DNA pellet of all the genetic samples and then be able to store them until they're needed (cutting down some work later in the process).

Samples were taken 12/24/22 from flash frozen plants. All crosses and species and clone names have been meticulously recorded. The person doing the alkaloid extractions will not get a list of the specific clones (to avoid research bias) all plants were grown under the same conditions and in the same soil.

The alkaloid samples were cut from different parts of the plant and labeled (tip, mid, lower points, inner white flesh, core, outer green flesh) different types of cacti are present as well including but not limited to pachanoi, peruvianus, ariocarpus, astrophytum, bridge, scop, santaensis, and riomizquenesis.

Because I took the samples from freshly frozen plants, I will be able to get the wet weight, dry weight, alkaloid % and mescaline % as well. I'm hoping to get so results that I can publish on alkaloids by the end of summer 2024, and genetic results by the end of 2025.

I look forward to the results of your study. What species of cacti are you using?

I think there is also spachianus, brevispinolus, PC from several different people

I think I heard about this effort privately from someone else a year or two ago and have been wondering if and when it would be completed and published.

I might know some people who donated some cacti to this cause.
I might even be among them.

I look forward to the results, assuming they are made public.

I'm definitely going to be publishing results! The biggest hurdle is that there isn't much research already done, which would mean that there is next to no data to compare our results to. Eventually when we do get results it'll make the future a lot easier, you could test a small piece of a seedling and be able to compare to the enzymes and genetic coding that we find, and be able to tell if that plant has potential to be potent or not, as well as growth vigor and other aspects
