We're getting something similar here. I'm bringing the potted figs in and out depending on the weather so they don't get too cold and die, or come out of dormancy, and can't go outside for the season until May. I'd like to have them out by March.

The in-ground figs have banana boxes full of mostly dead sorghum and corn stalks and leaves over them, covered in plastic. I probably ought to add some mulch, too.

Had big wind come through yesterday, and blew over the cages I had put over two of the three hazelnuts because I forgot to staple them down. It bent them over, but didn't break or up root them, so maybe they're ok. I stomped the soil back down around them, and it was the consistency of thick oatmeal because of all the rain. I have concerns about drainage.

You'll be alright man

But yes,  I'd do like said and bring in all the potted ones. They will surely perish if you dont.

I gotta now bring in all my plant out of the shed and that will be one daunting task!  Every square inch of my house is already covered in even more plants  :facepalm3:

good luck with yours

I have thought about getting some truffle inoculant for the hazelnut trees, but in my clay soil, I'm not likely to get many.

My property is right next to a large woodland area, so my soil should have plenty of fungi in it already.

My trees have about 5 inches of snow mulch right now. I might go shovel some more on them later.

Mine too,  and the temp is currently 9 degrees.

All mine are dead now,  and this is why I took all those big cuttings.

Mine are covered and insulated, but I gave a couple to my brother, which I doubt he covered. I guess that can be my experiment to see how cold hardy <1 year old fig roots are.

I do have one baby out there,  and I covered it with layers of cloth. It is now insulated with snow now too. Hopefully it will survive.

My other tress were just too tall and bushy to cover,  same scenario every year

What is your current temp?

I hate snow,  and I hate the cold!

It started really snowing here now.

I'm actually shocked,  as we rarely get snow.

Cancelled the Issai hardy kiwis that hadn't been delivered yet. Already received Anna and Meader. Found out they only fruit in areas that have a smooth transition from winter to spring, otherwise they flower with just a few warm days, and then the flowers get killed when it frosts again, and then no fruit that year, which would be every year, here.

Still, I could grow them to sell cuttings, I guess.

Shisandra has the same issue with frost and flowers, but the medically interesting components of the berries are also found in the leaves, so may be worth growing. In both cases, I may be able to do, like, a collapsible trellis thing that I could fold down and cover kind of like a cold frame in the spring to protect from frost.

I've updated the OP to reflect the current state of the plan. Even after cancelling all that stuff, I'm still about $600 deep into this project.

Was wondering about the suspicious headline change from $700 to $600 :sherlock:

Neat plans B_H, lookin' forward to seeing how it all plays out.  I just sprayed our peach and nectarine with copper, as we lost nearly our entire crop on those trees last year from a fungus that causes gnarly lookin' boils and leaf-curling on the foliage.  Hope that doesn't happen again this year or I'm liable to just ditch those trees and plant more plums and apricots, cause they're doing great.

Oof, I hope you're able to get that fungus under control.

I'm pretty disappointed about the kiwis. When they work, they can be heavy producers of nutrient and calorie dense fruit. Mostly carbs, tho. What I really need is more protein. I'm hoping the Siberian Peashrub and Illinois Bundleflower will cover some of that.

I just found out that Ashwagandha can be grown as an annual in my zone and will flower and produce fruits and seeds in the first year, so I'm picking up a few seeds of that when the weather warms up a bit. I don't know how well the seeds would handle exposure to sub-zero temperatures.

I'll probably be getting another handful of fig cuttings in the next few weeks when Figaholics has their annual sale. Nothing too crazy this time, I had like 20 cuttings going at one point last year.
