Bad @ss brother!
I can't wait to see your progress, as you have inspired me to start doing a lot more with my yard
Have you ever thought of growing Elaeagnus umbellata?
I dug up a few small treelings out in my woods, and I planted them in my yard for a privacy screen.
Now, three years later they are at least fifteen feet tall!
They totally blocked off my nosy neighbors in the back, and the extra bonus is all the thousands of juicy, delicious berries that I get to eat, not to mention that they are medicinal too!
They also bring all the birds to my yard too, all kinds of species!

Goumis and Seaberries are similar, but not nearly as invasive.
I feel you man, and yes, it is all over the place here and I mean everywhere!
I actually didn't know just how invasive it was until I really started reading.
Sorry for suggesting that to you my man!

Right on man!
Carolina buckthorn is a very attractive tree, and it grows here. I'll have to take some cuttings next time I see it for my yard as well

Baby_Hitler said: Also, I just ordered some Zizyphus spinosa (Sour Jujube) seed. I've been on the waitlist for months, and they just came in. They make good rootstock for Zizyphus jujuba. If I can get them going, I have found a source for Kongfucui jujube scions, which don't seem to be available as plants yet. They're supposed to be some great new variety developed in New Mexico a few years ago. I'll probably do a Li and a Lang too, for comparison, and pollination.
Man, you really are going all out!
What is your grow zone by the way?

Mulberry, Juneberry, and Medlar are out. The nursery I was getting them from ran out of mulberry, and it wasn't worth the shipping on just the other 2. I'll try again next November. I think I got enough going on.
I'm right with you on the zone. Well I'm 7b, but same difference basically.
You'd be amazed on how many tropicls that can be grown in the ground in our area and come back every year with absolutely no protection!

Yeah, I never have covered or mulched mine. Not sure that it would even do any good. They always die and come back from the roots every season, topping out at seven or eight feet, much too tall to cover.
I thought that maybe we wouldn't get below the 20's for lows this season but I looked ahead and we have some teens
So, bye bye fig trees
I'm going tot take mad cuttings, before those teens hit though!
Actually, I'm going to go do it right now!

Baby_Hitler said: If you're sure about the varieties, you can sell the cuttings on etsy or figbid.
how much fruit do you normally get from a tree that was killed to the ground over winter? That Ross guy grows some super dense, like 3-4 feet apart, which is way too close if they aren't dying back, but works if they do.
I have a mission, some olympians, and two others that I totally can not remember for the life of me. My trees top out at about seven or eight feet, all attained from a single growing season. But, the one year that we had a really mild winter, when they did not die back, I got about ten feet on my mission. And the spread is about five feet or so.
I get so much fruit from them all, that I can actually go out every morning and pick enough to keep a small family very happy.
I'll have to shoot you some pics this spring when they start coming out, and some more when they are full of fruit
I never knew about fig bid, but I'm checking it out now, thanks a lot!!!

Well, this is the end of all my fig trees
I'm going to go hack as many big branches off that I can before that happens.
It's not even supposed to be this remotely cold here, not even in January!
Alaska has come to my neck of the woods, and I do not like it

On a side note, that big old five foot long branch that I took, is pushing out new buds and has roots!
I'm going to grow lots of potted figs and bring them in for the winter next season, so I can get a head start.
Oh wait! I'm acting lie this is the fig thread in the garden
My bad brother

Baby_Hitler said: We're getting something similar here. I'm bringing the potted figs in and out depending on the weather so they don't get too cold and die, or come out of dormancy, and can't go outside for the season until May. I'd like to have them out by March.
The in-ground figs have banana boxes full of mostly dead sorghum and corn stalks and leaves over them, covered in plastic. I probably ought to add some mulch, too.
Had big wind come through yesterday, and blew over the cages I had put over two of the three hazelnuts because I forgot to staple them down. It bent them over, but didn't break or up root them, so maybe they're ok. I stomped the soil back down around them, and it was the consistency of thick oatmeal because of all the rain. I have concerns about drainage.
You'll be alright man
But yes, I'd do like said and bring in all the potted ones. They will surely perish if you dont.
I gotta now bring in all my plant out of the shed and that will be one daunting task! Every square inch of my house is already covered in even more plants
good luck with yours

Mine too, and the temp is currently 9 degrees.
All mine are dead now, and this is why I took all those big cuttings.

I do have one baby out there, and I covered it with layers of cloth. It is now insulated with snow now too. Hopefully it will survive.
My other tress were just too tall and bushy to cover, same scenario every year
What is your current temp?

I hate snow, and I hate the cold!
It started really snowing here now.
I'm actually shocked, as we rarely get snow.
