Masters Mix
    #28597690 - 12/25/23 03:41 PM (1 month, 2 days ago)

Hello y'all
There is an online vendor that sells a fruiting mix that has pellets that are made of half oak hardwood and half soy hulls.- rehydrate and then go from there. Has anyone had success with this? Or am I better off buying the oak pellets and soy hulls separately and making my own?

I don't have experience with those combination pellets, but my advice is to go with what makes more economical sense for you and the size of your grow. I can get 40lb bags of hardwood pellets for $7 and 40lb bags of soy hull pellets for around $15-20 (US).

I assume youre talking about mushroom media online's combo pellets? They absolutely suck. I bought some a couple of years ago to try them out and had really poor results. Here's some pics I sent to the company. They basically told me it was my fault and no one else has issues with the. I grow hundreds of lbs a week. I'm not a hobby grower and this fucking guy tells me it's my fault even with these pics I sent. I couldn't find the lions mane pics i had but it was worse than the oysters. About half yeild on the lions mane

Also you can see in the last Pic everything ran slower as well. Those oyster bags were all made at the same time. It just looked like the mycelium had a really hard time digesting the substrate

Maine cap n stem has combo pellets now that work great. Of course it's always cheaper to just go buy hardwood fuel pellets and some bags of soybean hulls locally. Shipping is expensive

Hey Storm...I wonder if it was a moisture content issue.
I assume they're selling premade sterilized bags. Maybe the moisture content is off, or maybe their mix just sucks in general.
I also wonder if they make their bags purposely w/more water to compensate for stagnant time due to inventory sitting and shipping.
Or maybe their mix sucks for whatever other reason.

We're not talking about pre made bags. We're talking about dry pellets you just add water to and sterilize. I made the bags

Why did you suck so bad at it, strom??? Obviously you need to work on your technique...

For real, that sucks. I've had good experience with Seth at mmo for other things. I use their soy hulls and haven't experienced any slow growth. Perhaps the wood they used was fir or something with antifungal properties.

I get along with Seth just fine and we still talk and text occasionally. I still buy my bags from him but I think he kind of dropped the ball on those combo pellets.

yeah those pellets are no good. I hate soy everything. Some say It will help breast development.  I recommend to boycott soy. oat and wheat bran is ok.

A 50/50 mix of hardwood fuel pellets and soybean hulls will give you a way better yeild than supplimenting with bran. Try some side by side comparisons. It's no competition

Complex question and I did find some information on my own *tldr it's possible *

I just got my some LC shitake , maitake , lions mane, blue oyster*idc about the oyster I know it will grow on anything*

I plan Oat Grain spawn , Oak HWFP and gypsum*small amounts idk*.

But I'm unsure if I should do a additive as well due to wanting to budget balance and avoid stuff I may not use... like 40lbs of additive will I?

I cant find oak sawdust , I found 20lb bbq oak red/white pellets at HD for 18$. *idk if price wise what's best but budget doesn't allow bulk*

I want to make a masters mix but I cant find soy hulls nearby.
I have Wheat bran 40lbs for 25 or SOYBEAN meal *44% protein*  50lb for 28. I REALLY don't want to buy that much additives, So should I even grab either or?
*
Could i use some leftover additives in the cubes? * if i do buy them?

If you do use bulk pellets, I'd avoid BBQ pellets - too expensive. Look for hardwood fuel pellets. Many places have pallets of them $7-8 for 40lb. Soybean meal is a different product - standard Master's Mix uses soybean hulls, $15-20 / 40 lb.

I was looking around i see the listing for fuel pellets cheaper but they don't mention what wood the pellets primarily are .

I'm planning my blocks around maitake (grifola frondosa ) which prefer oak. sometimes maple. *according to all the info out there*

if i can do them grifola frondosa  the shitake should be good i figure...
I'm less worried about the lions mane and not at all the oysters.

i was going to use the BBQ pellets to start *eat the cost this is all personal*
then experiment later.

i know about the meal vs hull i mentioned it... there's some info as using it like bran. 10-20% vs hulls 50. Someone might have experience ....

I would grab the cheapest pellets and some bran and play with that.  All the literature about wood lovers needing hardwood was written before anyone started growing on pellets. The pelletizing process renders the woods more accessible to more fungi.

I would try a bag of the cheap stuff. You could do a side by side with hardwoods vs softwoods if you wanna add in a little experiment.

How're you planning to sterilize your substrate?

I did some side by side grows recently just out curiousity. I only did it with oyster and lions mane. The yeild was slightly diminished on the oysters and very diminished on the lions mane

It probably varies by manufacture regardless of wood type. I harvested lm yesterday and was getting 60 oz off of 10lb blocks, some of my best weight ever.
