Pink Oyster Fail?
    #28594184 - 12/22/23 02:58 PM (1 month, 5 days ago)

I'm growing Pink Oysters for the first time (well, first gourmet period) and without knowing anything, I just stuck the North Spore block in the monotub after cutting the top of the bag off. It started pinning immediately, but has been stuck at around this phase of growth two days.

I read that oysters need a lot of FAE. I'm using Pastywhyte's Dialed Mono tub and misting it daily. Have I deprived it of FAE too much? Can I just harvest the mushrooms at this phase, or is it a lost cause?

Yes you've suffocated them. You cant grow oysters in a tub, no matter how many holes. Just sit them on the counter and mist often

Good to know!

I've read that oysters go bad quickly-- I imagine these are goners?

They look plenty good for eating, even might wait another 12-24 hours before harvesting. Pinks do go bad quickly but it's a matter of days after harvesting. They start to smell like goat mixed with tuna. That's how you can tell they're past prime.

You will get bigger fruits if you cut a slit in the bag rather than cutting the top off.

Appreciate the help.

I've got a bag of Chestnuts and King Oysters on deck, so hopefully those'll go better with this advice.

On the chestnuts cut deeply into the substrate when you cut an x in the bag. They'll be more likely to pin there and not everywhere under the bag

Good tip. How long do you incubate chestnuts?

Can I soak the block in cold water for a few hours after harvesting the first flush and expect success if I give it more air?

Probably don't need to soak it unless it feels really light. Just give it a week or two and it will start pinning again. Maybe mist the top of the block once a day to recover lost moisture
