I have a t-shirt that reads: "No one should be be in prison for weed"
I'll try to post a pic. I have it in white and black.

That's how I feel.

I'm curious how they ended up with federal charges on simple possession. Where they crossing state lines to purchase? I suppose many of them live near the border.

Seems like most people didn't read the article. It only impacts federal charges for use or possession on federal lands (Federal parks) and Washington DC and that includes very very few people in the overall scope of things. Almost always possession and usage charges are at the state level
This was a dog and pony show move meant to appeal to both sides of the argument without actually doing something substantial to improve things
I'm not mad about what they did, I'm mad that they bothered to take the time to do something so minor when they could've easily done something that corrected things much more, and they of course want to tout this as a step in the right direction when in fact it changes next to nothing

He can't pardon state charges, obviously. That's a foundational part of how our system works.

This feels like a little way too late. Why didn’t he do this years ago. I haven’t heard him even mention federal legalization. This is just a cheap attempt to get more voters. He’s already got my vote because of the alternative. But honestly, this just feels lame at best to me. Good for them. But they had to wait this whole time. They didn’t need to wait at all. They should’ve never been in trouble.

I don't care what his political motives are. I'm focused on people being released.

I’m still waiting on that federal legalization. Because those people could still get in trouble as is. Which makes this feel like an empty gesture to me.
It’s still great for the people that got out. But it doesn’t fix anything.

This article lays it out nicely: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/what-do-biden-s-weed-pardons-really-mean/ar-AA1lVgEn?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=d099284fb54c4d26b4af4b380a37804a&ei=27
Quote:
Marijuana is a Schedule I drug, alongside substances like heroin and LSD. Earlier this year, Biden's Department of Health and Human Services issued a recommendation to the Drug Enforcement Agency, which controls the drug schedule, to move it to Schedule III, the same as ketamine and Tylenol with codeine. That wouldn't entirely legalize it - it would still be illegal, per the federal criminal code - but it would make things like tax breaks, interstate commerce, and banking more accessible to cannabis companies. It's on Congress to decriminalize federally. The States Reform Act, a bipartisan bill aimed at decriminalizing cannabis and building a federal framework so states could regulate it like alcohol, was introduced for a second time in October. It didn't make it to a vote in the previous session, but other bills have come closer: In both 2020 and 2022, under Democratic leadership, the House of Representatives passed the MORE Act, which would have decriminalized cannabis under federal law. While the bill never made it to a vote in the Senate, Democrats reintroduced it to the House in September. Until actual decriminalization comes, though, we can only move so far. "The issue is," says Davis, "if we're continuing to arrest people for it, have we really made a difference?"
Biden's pardon of Federal-level Weed possessions could lead to a more Federal level decriminalization effort, which would be awesome! So if Biden gets re-elected in the next term (a long shot, i know), he could pave the way for bigger and better drug legislation on our favorite smokable green herb. I like to think of this pardon as a teaser trailer.

Does anyone else find it ironic that Biden is the person who literally penned the war on drugs? Some may think he should not be applauded in any way for starting to undo those massive harms.
He's been quick enough to demand 10's of billions for new wars personally in the senate, but not so quick to undo the war he actually started.

He's a classic american politician , doing what his handlers think will get him headlines that lead to votes
Regardless I do think it's progress that rich elderly white dudes who used to worry about the dangers of things like marijuana and homosexuals are now being pushed to act like champions for the same causes. Even (some) republicans are starting to be forced into the 21st century, albeit very slowly

But THIS IS A BIG STEP AND RED POLITICANS ARE MEAN
newsflash: all politics are bullshit for billionaires. If you aren’t a billionaire, you’d be better served tearing down most federal government and trying to put it in the hands of your own community; which is most likely just as retarded and divided on important issues because of BILLIONAIRES owning MEDIA. If you really think the whole thing is ANYTHING BUT a dog and pony show I seriously am jealous. There is no “good” vs “bad”. Just people competing for money and control.

Which is an actual position that is contrary to both parties. No democrats will admit it tho. Fuck republicans and fuck democrats. We need a third party that is REALISTIC.
