Viability of intentional Rosecomb for streamlined production of caps
    #28503124 - 10/13/23 10:41 AM (3 months, 13 days ago)

Given that caps contain the most actives, and petroleum derivatives cause caps to form where they contact through rosecomb, could one intentionally trigger rosecomb for a greater yield of active components?

Some questions I haven't been able to find answers online for:

  • Can rosecomb growths be triggered in places other than the cap? For instance the mycelium
  • Do rosecomb growths have the same potency given they don't go through the "proper" growth stages
  • What food-safe products can be used to trigger rosecomb. I know it's petroleum derivatives, and things like kerosene, diesel, and lysol do - but how about moisturizers or vaseline?

If rosecomb could be triggered on mycelium with something food safe and accessible like vaseline, and retains some degree of potency, one could make a really efficient way of harvesting.

For instance lets say you have your standard coir-rye bulk sub, and you put a porous, low-density material like thin balsa wood or cardboard on it.
If you wait for it to colonize, then apply the chemical, you could initiate cap formation on it, then scrape it off with a blade.

Have you grown mushrooms? What teks have you used? Let's start there first.

I've been growing B+ for about a year now, and after multiple failures and poor yields, I was finally able to nail down aseptic technique and my current batch has been productive and mold free for about 7 flushes I think?

I've been inoculating my rye grains with rhizo on agar, spawning to straight coir.

Not looking for a way around some problem, just curious if there's ways to make the pipeline more efficient.

Like, imagine if you could just use a scalpel and scrape off rosecomb from a colonized plane, that'd be awesome!

Although the caps, on average,  seem to have a higher psilocybin content than the stipes, the high variability among different samples makes such difference insignificant. If you are looking for a higher psilocybin content you can resort to cloning or just consider penis envy.

If you find the possibility of adding petroleum derivatives interesting, feel free to do the experiment and report back your findings. I haven't seen anyone trying it yet. After all, the shroomery is a place to exchange information. That's how the knowledge reported here is generated.

Insignificant indeed. I’m in contact with a lab running hplc testing of mushrooms. They have quite a few side projects including stipes vs caps.  Over dozens of comparisons there is no notable difference.

Psilocybe zapotecorum has the highest content of any wild species, at almost 3%.    Psilocybe azurescens used to be the strongest, at 2%.

I don't think petroleum derivatives would trigger rosecomb reliably, but give it a try and report back.

Thank u so much Alan and where would a body find a culture or print of one of these? We are trying to set up liquid media culture tanks and are having problems keeping consistent alkaloid contents .
