Question about old Psilosybe. Allenii

I found some P. allenii a few weeks ago, and we harvested most of it, leaving some to grow and produce spores. We have just gone back, and there are a few more, but lots of old ones. These old ones are completely blue and pretty much dry. Is it inadvisable to eat them? I am unsure of what the risks might be. They d

o look a little grody. Thanks for your wisdom!

They look very manky. You might risk food poisoning. Not advisable in any case, and even worse if you trip at the same time.
If you are seriously desperate though, you could let them sit in strong alcohol three to four days until all the bad stuff is killed off and the active compounds have been extracted, so you'd only need to drink the liquor.

Yeah, they're a bit too far gone. They've also lost quite a bit of potency. But as Anglerfish said, you could put them in alcohol. Another possibility is tea. Let them sit in boiled water for 15-30min, that'd kill off any germs as well. Discard any moldy mushrooms, though, as some molds produce toxins that won't break down from neither alcohol nor hot water. There's no need to leave any mushrooms in the field for spore production. By the time you come to pick them they've already released billions of spores

Nah, you'd have to boil them for quite a while to get rid of the hardiest shit. Boiled water drops temperature really fast.
Then again, I would probably throw these out. Like I would any rotting foodstuff.

Nope. Bacterias start to die at 65°C. This is why your boiler (hot water tank) is set to 75C°. Something like 99,9% of all bacterias die after 1 minute of boiling.
But yes, I'd throw them out too. In fact, I wouldn't even pick them

Not all bacteria die instantly at 65°C. I read that certain bacterial spores can survive above-boiling temps for a while. In any case, eating mushrooms that are prone to grow in less than hygienic environments, it doesn't hurt to be thorough. Too much poop and whatnot about. It is actually quite funny that people will be super picky when it comes to eating food, but as soon as drugs are involved they'll pick up almost anything from the ground and consume it more or less without concern.
Speaking for my own part though, I've had stomach issues with tea. Not very serious, but still enough to shake the trip slightly. Those issues were never present with alcohol extract. It is always smooth as hot butter.

I don't think any bacteria dies instantly at 65 but most will die at that temperature after a while. As good as all bacteria dies very fast at boiling temperatures. Bacterial spores often survive boiling temperatures, but they survive alcohol as well They're usually resistant to a lot of shit. Spores are usually harmless, though.
Never had any problems myself and I'm eating fresh pans straight from buffalo shit Never tried with alcohol. How do you do it?

It was pans from horse shit for me, probably not the wisest thing to do in general, but the sheer absurdity of it made me feel more connected with the natural world, if that makes any sense

Weigh the appropriate dose, crush to powder in mortar, put in a small jar or bottle, cover with 60% clear liquor and let it sit in my cupboard for at least 48 hours, usually up to a week. But it can sit for way longer. Then I strain it through coffee filter into a shot glass or whatever and gulp it down. Guava or mango juice mixed in works well to spare your throat from the liquor heat and/or the earthy mushroom taste, if desired. I like heat and earth though, so it works well pure for me. Something with the mushroom taste that provides the right anticipation.
Of course, I have eaten fresh mushrooms as is from time to time, but that's probably ten years ago at least.
To each his or her own, I guess.

Boiling water kills anything harmful almost instantly.
I wouldn't recommend alcohol - I've cleaned my hands with 70% isopropyl alcohol for 30 seconds and then made a thumbprint on an agar dish - lots of things grew. Washing my hands with soap and water by contrast worked really well - nothing grew.

30 seconds is very brief. I let them sit for several days. Predominantly to extract the compounds, but overall it also helps killing unwanted organisms. As I say, to each their own. It works for me.

It's because 70% isopropyl alcohol or any alcohol lacks sporicidal action, it's used for disinfection, not for sterilization. Meaning it's effective against most living bacteria, fungi etc, but is ineffective against bacterial or fungal spores. Agar dish will catch surviving spores and give them a go. On the other hand, spores and living organisms stick to soap molecules and they get washed with water easily.

It’s because Alan’s thumbs are super dirty from all the mushrooms he picks.

Ho hum. Purplish brown thumbs from all the Psilocybe spores, I reckon.
