Trouble figuring out Perlite.
    #2858985 - 07/05/04 03:57 PM (13 years, 23 days ago)

i have a 66gal rubbermade storage container thing, and i took some perlite and soaked it in water and h2o2, and then i layered it out on the bottom. i went to add the water that is supposed to go up to half the perlite, and ended up with a soggy mess. i got a medicine dropper and sucked up most of it and figured id try for another go. but before adding more water, i added more perlite, because the layer had compacted a bit and i figured it needed it. so i added water, and im trying to figure out how i can tell if its halfway up BEFORE i have a soggy mess haha. so yea, how does everyone manage to add the right amount of water? just measuring it with your eye or just guesstimating you have the right amout or what?

i get the right amount of water by soaking the perilite and then placing it in a collander to drain (like spaghetti)
then i put the moist perilite into the rubbermaid
at a depth of 1-2 inches

Yep, just saturate it until it will not hold any more water. Even with h202 included you typically don't want any type of standing water in your chamber. Soak the Perlite in a large container, then drain it in a fine wire mesh collander and dump into your chamber after drained. Layered to a depth of 1-2 inches this should last 3-4 weeks keeping humidity high (unless you live in a particularly dry part of the country.

You can recharge the perlite by doing the same thing over again. It can be a little messy, but it's easy to clean up.

ah. so i should just soak the perlite in water and h2o2, strain it and just put it in the bottom, and that is all i need to do for a couple of weeks, and it will stay humid?

i figured you had to put actual water into it, cause thats what i read in a few perlite guides.

well thats alright though, cause i only been doing test runs getting ready for when i have to actually put my cakes in, so that i have it right when i have to really do it. alright, so one more time and let me confirm....

just soak, strain and layer, then let set for a couple weeks before i need to recharge?

Hell, I just dumped perlite into the bin and then added water until it was soggy.  If it's too wet, it'll dry.
