millet
    #2858837 - 07/05/04 03:20 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I bought a 50 lb bag of white millet and have had 5 tries at growing on it go sour. I've tried simmering before pcing and I've tried just putting rinsed millet in a jar with water then pcing. ive had very little success in growing on millet, it mostly ends with bacterial contamination. Could this be from the millet I got, or would it be on my end in the sterilization? last attempt was done using the fool proof birdseed method It wasn't so fool proof, all 8 jars had bacterial contams

What're you using for a filter for air exchange?

No I wasn't using my own prints, got syringes from sporeworks, worked great for the pf tek. I just made my first spore syringe actually, knocked up 16 pf jars and did some karo. They're growing faster than any I've done before...well not the karo, its growing but not as quick as the jars. I'm not sure if its the millet or not but its only like $8 for a 50 LB bag so I'll get a new one and try soaking next time. If I soak I don't have to simmer? Is it better to do both or will it ruin the seed. The tek I went by said to pc for 90 mins but a lot of others say 60 mins, is 90 too much?

its not the millet....you either have too much water in the jars or your jars are not sterilized for whatever reason

I've always used 350ml millet/200ml water and 1/4 teaspoon of gypsum per 1LT jar...as long as your millet is fungicide free this will work everytime

you can let soak overnight or pc right away either works fine..pc for 75mins at 15psi

if this dosen't work then you probably have something wrong with your filter

250 grams millet which is approx. 350ml volume per jar (quart or 1lt).

1/4 teaspoon gypsum per jar. Give it a stir as that will dust the millet seeds.

Add 200ml water and stir.

Sit it 24hrs if you want to hatch out endospores or pressure cook straight away at 75 to 90 minutes at 15psi. Jar left is pressure cooked, jar right is yet to be pressure cooked.

Note the loose profile of the pressure cooked millet. The water content is ok and the gypsum assists in avoiding clumps and/or it sticking to the base of the jar. If you get clumps sticking to the base of the jar, belt the base of the jar with the heel of a boot/shoe.

Inoculate the jars.
I shoot with a mycelium syringe then shake the jar and roll the jar to spread the mycelium more thoroughly throughout the millet profile. No more shakes at any stage further on because its not needed. No bacterial stalls/contamination either which can happen with shakes.
