ID Request (3 patches) - SF Peninsula
    #28586131 - 12/16/23 10:02 PM (1 month, 11 days ago)

These were from 3 patches found over the last 2-3 weekends.

Observations shared across patches:

Habitat: Woodchips patch 2 also around Decorative grasses

Stem:
- no annulus
- sturdy, white, and fiberous
- Bruises blue

Cap:
- Some variation in the patches
  patch 1:
    - Rounded bowls
    - light tan, absorbs moisture well
    - some slight blue bruising on the caps
    - straight but relatively well spaced gills

  Patch 2:
    - Some rounded, others flat
    - most tan, one albino-esque one with obvious bluing
    - straight but relatively well spaced gills

  Patch 3:
    - mix: Minor rounded, some flat, some showing waviness
    - tan, water absorbs easily especially in small cracks of cap

Spore Print:
  - dark purple
  - several have lighter / dim prints from being older or drying out

Smell:
Strong 'muddy' mushroom smell. Consistent with other prior ID'ed P. Cyanscens

Patch 1 Pics:

Patch 2 Pics:

Interesting albino-esque one:

Patch 3:

Self Proposed IDs:
Patch 1: P. Alleni
Patch 2: P. Alleni
Patch 3: P. Cyanscen (wavy cap) though some look more like P. Alleni (I'm still learning the differences - P. Cyans are easier to spot with the wavy cap or bottlecap young ones).

All appear to be Psilocybe allenii to me.

I can see that you have put considerable effort in to your ID request, but one thing I would try to include in the future is underside photos of the intact mushrooms, ideally in natural light where you find them.

Clear photos from an angle that captures the underside details well might be the most useful photos you could take, and I don’t hesitate to say that they are far more useful than photos of spore prints with the remains of the mushrooms alongside them.

Here is an example of the angle I am talking about.

Of course I am not saying that you should do this instead of printing. If it was a choice of one or another I would, but it isn’t.

You can do both if you print afterwards.

Also, the pale ones are called leucistic. True albino, isn’t something that’s really common, but I have found quite a few leucistic P. allenii.

I've also seen some waterlogged ones look kinda leucistic too, but that isn't something I know much about admittedly.

Thanks all for taking a look and sharing the P. Alleni ID - much appreciated!

Typerwritermonky and Dandurn - have enjoyed reading your posts in other threads as well!

Mycoangulo good note on the gills and intact photo capture - makes sense to add that in for the next ID posting - thanks!
