Release the side pins! (or not)
    #28583577 - 12/15/23 07:42 AM (1 month, 13 days ago)

Hi.  I have a block of Blue oysters starting and I see lots of side pins.  Should I open the side and let them grow or keep them contained and expose that side on the next flush?  Which will result in the largest total yield?

I typically just make slits in my bags. Opening the top like that gives less ideal fruits for oysters in particular. You can see they have long stems as they're fighting for more FAE.

You could try folding the top back down(if it will) after that flush and cutting a slit somewhere near the pins or elsewhere. It's already spent energy to make the pins but they still may abort even if you cut a slit in those spots now.

Thanks.  The instructions said to cut and "X", which I did and the mushrooms pushed it open.  It does look like all the side-pins did abort.  Maybe a smaller "X" next time?  I have two fans - one on all the time on low which generally keeps the CO2 below 1000ppm by itself.  I have a second fan which comes on high whenever the CO2 is above 800ppm.  This is what I read was a good level for fruiting oysters but those golden oysters below also look stemmy so maybe you are right about insufficient FAE.

You cut too big of an x in it but it will be OK. Just let it do it's thing. Don't worry about them side pins. Ain't nobody got time for that
