Its my 4th time making Agar. Made it pretty much same way as usual except added Nutritional yeast + used black food coloring for contrast. Problem is i did something wrong. Stirred too much, math was wrong on recipe, or too hot, idk. Bottom line it got wicked thick like hot pour-ee liquified browny batter if that makes sense. My math had to change to below cuz i only had 20g of Telephone Agar left so i adjusted recipe to agar powder i had available.
I Used: 20 grams of Telephone agar powder 500 ml of water (approximately 17 ounces) 2 tablespoons of potato flakes 1 tablespoon of Karo light corn syrup 2 tablespoons of nutritional yeast flakes
Using pic of cup i messed up so i could open it, show to yall and throw away. All i want to know is, are these ingredients (at these ratios) viable for a decent agar plate?
My QQ is, even though the consistency is weird, can you check my math on ingredients to see if this will actually be viable to grow myc on? Thank you. And yes the agar looks literally like poop i know.

This has got to be a troll post, but in the off chance it’s not, you may be better off buying pre poured plates for now.

The rubber on old garaged lids tends to be shot. Even if it looks alright it comes out of the pc kind of disintegrated and peels off the rims when they open after pc.
New lids are cheap. Rims don't go bad. I replace the lids a lot more frequently than rims.
My vote is toss them in the trash and don't look back.

The problem is it might grow too well on it making it hard to differentiate good myc from bacteria. It will eat it for sure. Start measuring everything in mass not volume (except the water) I usually do 10 g agar, 10g light malt extract (or potato flake in your case) and 1 g yeast to 500 ml Distilled water. The coloring is cool but doesn't really help much.
Also silicon gaskets last forever ime. They don't disintegrate

I think he was referring to the shitty thin gasket on the metal mason jar lids.

Mycelium would probably grow on that stuff. If you're curious just leave that one that you opened up to sit on the counter for several days. You'll see mold and bacteria on there in short order. If it grows fungus it grows fungus.
It does not look like a good prep in any way though. If materials and secrecy are your cruxes you could probably make it work if you have to. It will take a lot of troubleshooting though. You'll learn a lot.
Good luck.

Just make a new batch. Half the agar. (Or even slightly less)

The thing is all the lid does for my setup is keep the grain from drying out too fast. I put a full size sfd under my jar lid, the seal doesn't actually sit on the glass

i go by weight instead of volume, but this PDA recipe worked well: 100g water 2g agar 2g potato 0.9g karo
nichrome's idea of leaving it open to see what grows is a fun thing to try. it'll give you an idea of just how dirty your air/environment is

Same, this is my setup.

All the mp tape does is keep grain/material from coming up through the hole.

No but it is antimicrobial it's self so potentially it has detrimental aspects compared to malt. Honey also varies a lot in content. No 2 honey's are the same.

I have the sfd between the grain and the metal, helps the lid stay in the ring all snug so i can use em like a single piece. Makes them more user friendly in the SAB

It has disadvantages. In my experience, ME is better because it contains more glucose. The fructose in honey is also one of the only sugars that will carmelize in the pc. If you’re really into performance on agar, I would go for an actual lab mix with peptone, etc.

copy that. less agar. It sucks since I moved south from New York. There's an Asian food mart on every corner there. Here I think there's one within an hour and a half radius, and they don't carry agar supposedly.
whats worse, amazon wants like $8.00 for 1x 25g pack, my bud in new york gets them for $.50
One more QQ? Who can tell me where the absolute least expensive prepared petri agar plates are at online? Not cheap, just least expensive?
Wheres ur best Petri Plug at? per dish or whatever
