  • 1966:  The Jimi Hendrix Experience releases the single for "Hey Joe" b/w "Stone Free"

Quote:

"Hey Joe"

Released in December 1966, Hendrix's version became a hit in the United Kingdom, entering the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart in January 1967 and peaking at #6. The single was released in the United States on May 1, 1967 with the B-side "51st Anniversary" but failed to chart.  "Hey Joe", as recorded by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, remains the best known version of the song and is listed as #198 on Rolling Stone magazine's The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.  In 2009 it was named the 22nd greatest hard rock song of all time by VH1.  "Hey Joe" was the last song Jimi Hendrix performed at the Woodstock festival in 1969 and as such, it was also the final song of the whole festival. The song was performed after the crowd, comprising the 80,000 who hadn't yet left the festival, cheered for an encore.

"Stone Free" is a song by Jimi Hendrix, the first song he wrote. The Jimi Hendrix Experience first released it in December 1966 as the B-side of Hendrix's first single "Hey Joe." In December 1969 "Stone Free" was released as a single in the US, backed with "If 6 Was 9."

The song is one of the few songs by Hendrix played in standard tuning. It was written in one night, apparently inspired by a jam session in London. The bass line for the song resembles that the Mar-Keys song "Philly Dog."

History

"Stone Free" was recorded after the Experience had signed with Track Records, and was paid for with the Track advance. Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp of Track had arranged for the label to be "underpinned" by Polydor Records, which distributed their releases. It was recorded in De Lane Lea Studios on November 2, 1966, and quickly became popular as "a counterculture anthem" with lyrics reflecting Hendrix's restless way of life.

The song, a staple of Hendrix's set list, slowly changed form and became looser and longer. Inspired by a long, notable performance in the Royal Albert Hall in February 1969 (released in 1982 on The Jimi Hendrix Concerts) Hendrix re-recorded it in April of that year at the Record Plant.

Notable covers, other uses of the title

Supergrass recorded a cover of the song that was available on a limited-edition 7" vinyl companion disc to certain packagings of the 12" vinyl release of their debut album, I Should Coco.

Stone Free: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix was also the name of a 1993 Jimi Hendrix tribute album featuring his songs performed by various artists, including Eric Clapton, Living Colour, The Cure and Pretenders.

This song is included on the Gran Turismo 3 soundtrack.

The 1969 re-record from the Valleys of Neptune album was included in the Are You Experienced? DLC pack in Rock Band 2. It is just credited as being by Jimi Hendrix in the game, as the Valleys of Neptune album is not part of the Jimi Hendrix Experience Discography.

  • 1967:  The Lemon Pipers release the single for "Green Tambourine"

Quote:

"Green Tambourine" was the primary hit by the 1960s Ohio-based rock group The Lemon Pipers, as well as the title track to their debut-album Green Tambourine. Released towards the end of 1967, it peaked at number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for one week at the start of February, 1968 and earned the group a gold record for over a million copies sold. The record remained on the chart for three months. It was also the first U.S. number-one hit for the Buddah label. The Lemon Pipers would never repeat this success, although "Rice Is Nice" and "Jelly Jungle" did make it onto the charts in 1968.

The song is the story of a street musician pleading for someone to give him money. In exchange, he would play his green tambourine. The song's instrumentation contains the title tambourine as well as an electric sitar, a frequent signature of the so-called "psychedelic sound". Another hook is the heavy, psychedelic tape echo applied to the word "play" in each chorus and at the end, fading into a drumroll ("Listen while I play play play play play play/my green tambourine"). The echo is noticeably different in the mono and stereo mixes. The mono version also starts fading out slightly earlier than in the stereo version.

The single's B-side, "No Help From Me", featured lead vocals by guitarist Bill Bartlett and did not appear on either of the group's two albums.

In popular culture

Mrs. Miller covered the song on her 1968 album Mrs. Miller Does Her Thing.

Status Quo covered the song on their 1968 debut album Picturesque Matchstickable Messages from the Status Quo.

Lawrence Welk covered the song and his version placed on the Billboard Easy Listening survey.

Tripping Daisy covered the song on their 1992 debut album, Bill (The Dragon Street release).

At the end of the 2001 film Recess: School's Out, TJ and the gang are seen playing this song, with Mikey singing vocals (Mikey's singing voice provided by Robert Goulet). The gang and Principal Prickly are seen in the background, dressed and hairstyled in Sixties hippie clothing and/or hair.

A new drum track and the addition of cellos transformed the recording, and Bogart had 250 masters pressed and distributed to radio stations, informing them they had a hot-off-the-press exclusive. Three days of telephone calls and telegrams followed, and the promotion worked. "Green Tambourine" entered the Hot 100 on December 16, 1967, at number 68. Seven weeks later it became Buddah's first number one single. During the following year, the label became known for its bubblegum music, releasing hits like "Yummy Yummy Yummy" by the Ohio Express and "Simon Says" by the 1910 Fruitgum Co.

Oh well, I dig it! Happy birthday good music!!!

Hey man, glad you like them. I started in late 2009, but those posts got lost in the shuffle somehow. So I guess the ones that I have left started on January 1, 2010.

55th anniversary of "Hey Joe" today, BTW.
