Cold hardy cacti? zone 6b
    #28550934 - 11/20/23 10:36 PM (2 months, 6 days ago)

It seems like San Pedros wouldn't like the winters here in zone 6b. Are there any other psychoactive species that would?

Plant then in a pot and bring them in during the winter.  As far as I know that's the only option.

Yeah I'll try that but I don't have space for many pots inside so I'd like to find something I can grow more abundantly. I live in a cabin and heat with wood, which doesn't last thru the night, so it can get below freezing indoors in the mornings.

As far as i know, there isnt any species that can handle winter temps and survive.

:whathesaid:

It's impossible. I live in 7B and it can't even begin to be done here.

Trichs probably wont grow outdoors in the ground in any grow zone under 8B unprotected.

Lophopora in the wild regularly survive down to -f temps, terscheckii is also a cold climate cactus. I would greatly suggest the terscheckii over a loph tho, I haven't really heard of anyone being able to keep a loph in the same conditions in a collection

Yes,  but those cold spells are brief,  plus it warms back up during the day in their native environment.

No Lophs or Trichs can survive outdoors in any grow zone under around 8B on up, and 6B is just way too cold. Even in an unheated greenhouse here,  they would all freeze solid. Trust me I've tried, it just can't be done.

The only cacti that will grow in zone 6B are Opuntia's and possibly Cholla's, but the latter is really pushing it.

I've had several cacti survive weeks of snow and ice, if the soil is dry, you'd be surprised at how far you can push them. A month or so with nightly temps of 20 and dry soil hurt some, others were fine. I have about 20 that survived a whole day at -10
