Chicken of the woods cultivation?!
    #28525317 - 11/01/23 09:56 AM (2 months, 26 days ago)

Would really like to know if there's any proven methods of growing chicken of the woods in bags not on logs, and if so what's the substrate recipe being used?

Apparently: yes. Also see this scientific document: Successful large-scale production of fruiting bodies of Laetiporus sulphureus (Bull.: Fr.) Murrill on an artificial substrate (2013) Pleszczynska et all.

In:
World J Microbiol Biotechnol . 2013 Apr;29(4):753-8. doi: 10.1007/s11274-012-1230-z. Epub 2012 Dec 11.

And an url to pubmed:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23229287%20Successful%20large-scale%20production%20of%20fruiting%20bodies%20of%20Laetiporus%20sulphureus%20(Bull.:%20Fr.)%20Murrill%20on%20an%20artificial%20substrate

And this is what https://en.mycelinarium.eu/product/laetiporus-sulphureus/ say regarding the LC you can buy there:

"
Description
Laetiporus sulphureus - (Chicken of the wood) - a well-known and often collected edible mushroom. Especially young fruiting bodies are great to eat. We grow on hardwood sawdust enriched with wheat bran in a ratio of 10-30% by weight of dry substrate and inorganic substances such as gypsum, dolomite, chalk and sugar in various proportions from 10-30g per 1kg of dry substrate. The fungus grows at temperatures of 21-28 ° C and the fruiting body is formed at 21-25 ° C. The formation of fruiting bodies must be induced by the shock temperature - by placing an overgrown bag with substrate in the refrigerator for 24 hours. However, we do not open the bags, they are subject to mold very quickly, but we leave them closed and the fruiting bodies grow through the filter on the bag, which must touch the substrate. Suitable for experienced growers and people who like to experiment.

I’m interested in trying this too. Though it seems like they take a long time to grow.

My understanding is that Chicken of the Woods has pretty weak myc structure, with sawdust the fruit can detach itself easily, so fruiting with the bag tilted upward is a good idea.

I have a bag going with a decent size fruit coming out of the filter patch. I heard this is typically how they fruit from bags
