I'd say start em now. I believe you're starting kinda late though.

But if anyone else has any suggestions, I'd like to know, as I have some seeds sitting around as well.

It's too late for a spring harvest, but I think you can set them out in like September and harvest mid December.

There's two seasons a year I thought.

They won't even germinate unless it's fairly cold, like ~10-15C

they will germinate in warm weather....just keep out of direct sun light until well established...the sun is very powerful this time a year and will cook the hell out of young seedlings. harvest by mid december?? i don't think so...could be possible, but i don't know. the earliest i'd say would be early spring, maybe late late winter...that's my estimate, but i don't usually plant this time a year so i could be wrong.

I disagree, I've had seeds germ at 85F.

May, I offer a possible explanation for this difference in observations.

The difference in observations regarding poppy germination may not be so different at all. I propose that both lots of seeds, the ones that germinated in the colder temps and the ones that germinated in the hotter temps both went through a period of colder temperatures, and the conditions in which they germinated is not key to their germination but the cold period they endured before their germination (I'm sure most already know this). Here is the explanation:

Gibberellin is a chemical messenger to the Aluerone of a seed. The Aleurone is alive and it has a ploidy of 3n, it is a kind of endosperm. When the concentration of Gibberellic Acid is high enough it tells the Aluerone to make hydrolytic enzymes that will breakdown another endosperm that is quite starchy (this is the white fluff that we get from popcorn). The special layer of cells on embryo of the seed secretes the gibberellic acid, the Aluerone responds to it and makes hydrolytic enzymes (proteases and amylases) and secretes the enzymes into the starchy white endosperm, the starchy white endosperm turns into a clear sugar water type liquid that the embryo uses for food.

Abscisic Acid is another plant hormone that acts real fast as a warning mechanism, there are a few things Abscisic Acid does but the one we're concerned with has to do with dormancy.

Maple fruits won't germinate even though the temp is good because the concentration of Abscisic Acid [ABA} to Gibberellic Acid [GA] signals dormancy or time to produce the hydrolytic enzymes. This is perhaps much the same process that is going on in the poppy seeds.

Thus as time progresses over the winter ABA levels decrease while GA levels increase in the seed. This is determined by the temperature and length of time the temperature has held steady.

Best bet would be to just plant them in spring. Thats what i do. Higher germ rate for shure.
