Does music change on subsequent trips?
    #28580830 - 12/13/23 06:23 AM (1 month, 15 days ago)

Hi!  I’ve been doing periodic journeys over the last year. I was a long-term alcoholic and used mushrooms to get sober - I have 14 months now, and it’s a miracle.

I started out using the Johns Hopkins playlist for journeys. I don’t really dig classical music, but it was SO powerful and amazing when on the medicine!  And it stayed that way for a few journeys…and then it switched. The requiems got way too intense, the flute was too shrill…I just couldn’t tolerate it anymore.

So I decided maybe it had served its purpose. Next, I used the Saturday Trip playlist, which was good once, but I couldn’t handle it the next time. Stuff that seemed beautiful and powerful the first time just got creepy and intense.

I don’t like music that’s specifically engineered to make people trip balls or stuff with lyrics, since it’s important to me to keep the process a ceremonial ritual (because of my history). My last journey, I just ended up turning the music off completely, but I missed having it with me.

Has anybody else had this experience?  I wonder if your brain works through stuff once with certain music, and then it creates associations that seem creepy/threatening next time you journey with it?

I listened to classical music for part of my last trip. Then switched to a sensual playlist .
Sometimes I have music on shuffle and some music is to much for me or emotionally takes me down a road I don't want to go on. So I change it.
Congratulations on your sobriety!!!

I love to listen 70s live rock psychedelic bands during early comedown, while no music at peak. The music was great at that time, great with psychedelics.

Last time I tripped, the music was developing as visuals/dreams, I couldn't actually listen to the music, I was seeing it, so it was irrelevant what type it was for the most part. The moment the music stopped, for whatever reason, the dreams stopped till it started again. Everyone is different, so you just do what is more comfortable to you I guess.

I am partly deaf, but what I miss is mostly very high pitched sounds, eg. highhat is a sound I don't get at all, I miss squeaks and in speech I miss "s" "t" sounds.

I love instrumental music, particularly jazz, and as bardy pointed out in this forum
pink floyd's great gig in the sky is about the best it gets,
and it is worth seeing how music has changed or how you have changed, to me, it is the same as it was 50 years ago.

enjoy

I love Pink Floyd mate. Unfortunately not many people seem to even know about them nowdays. At least here they are still very well known, thank the Rock Gods.

I love listening to Floyd on the way up, but the lyrics can be intrusive when I'm truly tripping and guide me down paths that can be disturbing.

I tend towards something with no lyrics and a loose structure for the trip itself, and share your experience Chelonia.  Before eating the shrooms I choose a few candidates on YouTube, skimming through to make sure they don't become 'dark' or significantly change tempo, then queue them up in a few browser tabs so if one isn't hitting the right spot I can swap during one of the 'remission periods'.  (Do others experience that, or is it just me - I can be tripping really hard, unaware of where or even who I am, then the shrooms let me go for a few minutes and I'm almost sober before they drag me back for another round).

Once I'm past the intense experience anything goes, but the last couple of times I've gone with a Devin Townsend medly that makes the hairs stand up on my arms.

As an aside, I've recently had issues with YouTube interrupting me with adverts and insisting I turn AdBlock off - potentially disastrous half way through an intense trip.  I've found that they're yet to do the same with AdGuard (a Firefox add-on).

I appreciate the input, everybody!  I think I’m going to try a classical shuffle next time and skip any that are too intense/ominous. I’ll miss the JH playlist - it was my first.

Ugh, yes, the ads!!!  Although I’ve also had some pretty interesting things turn up on ads during journeys. (When my intention was “am I capable of intimacy,” I kept seeing ads for JLo’s new lingerie line, Intimaci. I looked it up, and it’s real, but never seen it anywhere else.) And I’ve also had ads freak me out and confirm that nothing in the world is real, everything is AI, and the evil bots are trying to make me spend all my money and lose my mind. So there’s that.

I know what you mean about having lucid moments and not lucid moments. And not even knowing if I’m lucid moments!  Haha.

I have often wondered if it's only me that struggles with this - many a time have I wrestled with a remote trying to skip YT ads or struggled with navigating through these interruptions. Only to forget who or what i was trying to listen to and getting really frustrated with it all, then just laughing it off and putting a cd or LP on instead.

I'm stubborn though and often wont give up and find myself having to win, succeeding.... but then find the vibe has completely changed anyway :hehehe:

I have resorted to downloading sets/videos from youtube in advance so i can put on a USB as this is far less taxing whilst tripping

Respect mate!

I know exactly what you mean about a piece of music you previously loved suddenly developing an ominous character while tripping. I love classical music but can't touch it tripping. Made that mistake once listening to Takemitsu - fucked me up. Now, I almost always have a rolling playlist of dub-techno or deep house. It's hard to get stuck anywhere too dark.

The thing I really love though, is on higher doses I get insane auditory hallucinations - soaring harmonic sine and saw waves. It's maybe my favourite bit of the trip. By that point I have long since lost the ability to curate a playlist and am in a heap somewhere away from the speakers

That’s interesting!  I just ended up journeying with a classical music shuffle, and it was AMAZING!

I am so much more trusting of “real” instruments than sequenced stuff. Crazy how different we all are in our experience of this life.
