Compost incoculation
    #2857936 - 07/05/04 04:13 AM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Hello all!!!

I was wondering something and could not find an adequate answer. Can Pasteurized compost be directly inoculated with a spore syringe, or must you spawn using grain, rice flour etc. first and then mix it with the compost. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!!!!

Hesse

it will work but i'd advise you to go with grain then spawn to the compost, it'll be faster, less chance of contams ect.

What if you sterilized the compost, or mixed it with some grain and then sterilized it?

re: pasturized v. sterlization
i've always pasturized but some credible people (joshua) say they have better luck with sterlization. don't think that's where you were going though

you do understand the terms right? spawn w/ grain would be after pasturization/sterilzation. you want to grow out myc. on grain in jars. then you crumble and mix (spawn) to the compost, let it colonize for a few days, case, fruit, all of which are covered extensivly on the main page probably under adv. cult>>bulk, grain, ect.

yeah i know. i was just wondering if perhaps a mixture of pasteurized compost, grain and vermiculate could be sterilized and then inoculated with a spore syringe. i guess there is no reason why not, would the presence of the of compost slow down mycelium growth and colonization rates?

yeah it'll work, i think anno posted results of various substrates in jars and shit (compost) didn't do well at all i'm pretty sure. reguardless i'm not saying that the compost would inhibit growth but that it'd be quicker/more efficent to follow methods already described, not to discourage thinking for yourself, but you know, you got the basic rules you can expand or modify a bit, but basically, not much to improve on (again not discouraging expernination though)

This was found in the FAQ

Quote:

Modified dung containing PF tek substrate by BJ:
Mix for 10-12 half pints:

5 cups vermiculite
3 cups manure
10 tblspns BRF
1.5 - 1.75 cups water
Fill your canning jars, sterilize for an hour in a pressure cooker and inoculate via the PF tek method. Once your substrate is fully colonized, crumble and case with 50/50+.
Since the manure is already added to your substrate, there is no need to spawn with manure and risk contamination in this step.
Just place your cased substrate into your humidity chamber and watch them grow!
